xii. the pregnancy gone wrong
2.03

Atlas was back to work, did he want to be back at work yet, no, not really. But he was back, and that all that mattered. He had taken on a slow day, working beside Burke, helping when he needed help. Atlas was good, a good surgeon and a good person, so he really didn't mind just helping and assisting the other cardio attending.

Doctor. Burke is operating, performing a thoracotomy on Mr. Gaston. Cristina enters the OR. A doctor hands her a gown, which she puts on.

"You're late." Doctor. Burke comments and Atlas wants to throat punch him, who cared if she was late, she was an intern who most likely had lots of other patients.

"I apologize." Cristina spoke softly.

She joins a group of interns who are watching the surgery. She seems tired—which Atlas catches. He wouldn't say anything because he was tired too, and would rather not get called out for it.

Doctor. Burke is still operating on Mr. Gaston when Atlas notices Cristina is looking exhausted and sweaty.

"The tumor has infiltrated the pericardium." Doctor. Burke says out loud, telling the room what's happening.

"Yang." Doctor. Burke says, trying to catch the interns attention. "Yang!" He shouts, snapping Christina out of her trance.

"What, sorry?"

"Is my surgery interrupting your daydreaming?"

"No. Sorry."

Atlas can tell something is wrong. He can see it in her eyes every time he glances up from where he's positioned at the operating table. He was going to say something before Doctor. Burke cuts him off, asking Christina a question, "There is an arrhythmia when I press down on the tumor. That is a sign of what, Yang?"

"Um ... ... ah it's a sign of, it's a ... it's a sign that the uh tumor has infiltrated the pericardium." Christina struggles to get out.

"Possibilities?" He sternly says.

"In all...I'm sorry. I ..." Christina trails off, struggling to say anything.

"Do your homework Yang. It could be causing a tear in the aortic muscle of the heart." Doctor. Burke says as Atlas steps away from the table and moves toward the intern slowly.

"Hmm. So he's got a broken heart."

Cristina starts to sway and collapses just as Atlas reaches her, the intern falling into his arms.

"Yang are you okay?" He asks urgently.

"Cristina. Cristina." Burke voices. "Somebody help her!"

Atlas lays Cristina on her back as Izzie and Doctor. Bailey come rushing in. Doctor. Burke had stopped the surgery but not moved from where he's standing as doctors start to surround Atlas and Cristina.

"Cristina! Don't just stand there dammit. Somebody help her. Get a gurney in here!" Burke yells, Doctors rush out to get a gurney.

"Cristina." Izzie mummers as she crouches down with Bailey by her side.

"We've got it Doctor. Burke. We've got it." Bailey announces.

Atlas helps put a breathing mask on Cristina's face.

"Cristina! What hurts?" Cristina doesn't respond but is conscious, she tries to force words out but Atlas gently shushes her. "Let's get her out of here. There's a patient on the table. Lift." Bailey instructs. They lift Cristina onto the gurney and start moving her out of the OR.

"Good, good." Atlas helps move Cristina out and down the hall.

"Uh! Her pulse is racing. I need her on a monitor to get a BP. Also I want her started on a liter of LR wide open. Izzie run ahead to emergency and let them know we're on our way." Bailey spits out orders to everyone around, to Atlas she sounds like a boss bitch.

Atlas sees Christina trying to talk so he removes her mask. "What's up?" He whispers.

"Seven weeks. I'm pregnant Atlas."Cristina says breathlessly.

Bailey, Atlas and Izzie stop and look at each other. They move the gurney into an elevator. Izzie is standing shocked outside. "Find Addison Shepherd. Izzie be discreet." Bailey says as the elevator door closes.

Addison is performing an ultrasound on Cristina whos now lying in a hospital bed. Dr. Bailey is standing behind Cristina's bed, stroking her hair well Atlas has his hand clasped in the interns. He felt like parent who's child was sick and hurt, he knew Bailey felt the same way.

"Have you notified the father?" Addison asks.

Cristina tries to speak but doesn't say anything, she just breaths out short, fast, all kinds of breaths.

"Cristina? Cristina? Uh, Cristina? Cristina? Is there anyone we can call?" Bailey questions the interns softly.

Cristina just continues slightly gasping, but her grip on Atlas hand tightens, which both Addison and Bailey notice.

"Oh we're losing her."

Addison points to the screen displaying Cristina's uterus, "Oh man do you see that? It's an extra uterine pregnancy in the tube there. She's bleeding out."

Atlas is in the O.R where Addison is performing surgery on Cristina to remove the pregnancy. Doctor. Bailey is still behind Cristina watching over her and Izzie is observing Addison preform the surgery.

"She's gonna be okay, right?" Ozzie worries.

"How attached was she to this pregnancy?" She asks the blond intern, but her eyes then drift towards Atlas who's hand is still holding a Christina's.

"I don't know. She's a pretty private person." Izzie replies, trying her best to think of any time Christina had mentioned being pregnant.

"She's lost a lot of blood but I've got it from here. Doctor. Bailey, Doctor. Lee, you must have a surgery or two of your own today."

Bailey shares a look with Atlas, "were fine right here."

Cristina lying in a hospital room. Bailey is sitting in a chair watching over her. Well Atlas sits beside the resident in a chair he had stolen from a nurses station. There's just silence for a little bit until Christina wakes up and speaks, "What happened?"

"You had an extra uterine pregnancy. Your left fallopian tube burst." Bailey says.

Atlas sighs, "Doctor. Shepherd... she did everything she could but there was too much damage. She couldn't save the tube."

Cristina doesn't say anything, just closes her eyes, her hand finding it's way to Atlas's.
