xvii. thunder and lightning
9.24

Meredith Greys water breaks as lightning cracks and thunder booms outside the hospital window, and Eliza is the one to be at her beck and call. Not Oliver, the father of her unborn child. Not Christina, her person for all means necessary. Not Atlas, who had been the one to coat Bailey into leaving her lab. Not even Alex, whom she had grown close too.

She calls Eliza, her sister-in-law. Who is the only one that isn't occupied by a patient, who isn't busy, and who homes running into the room where she's sitting on the couch in the attendings lounge.

"Mer?!" Eliza lets the door slam shut as she looks from Meredith on the couch and the puddle of fluid on the ground. "Your water broke!"

Meredith nods as she moves on the couch, taking in a deep inhale of air, attempting to soothe the pain she already feels. "Yes, yes, it did."

A small chuckle from Eliza is mixed in with the sound of thunder and the bright flash behind the closed window. "Let me help you," she speaks softly and reaches out to take her sister-in-law into her arms and help guide her outside the lounge. "Having a baby during one of the worst storms this year, crazy."

Meredith stills and grunts as she places on hand on her stomach. As a doctor, she knew what her body was doing in order to help guide the baby out, but gosh darn, she wasn't ready for it. "Yeah, I'll name him thunder, haha."

When it's thought about, Eliza was someone good for Meredith to call. She wouldn't make a big fuss about the situation, she would help her to her room, and as an obgyn, she could preform an ultrasound to help her friend feel better about everyone.

"And if it's a girl — lightning." El chuckled at her own words as she guided Meredith down and into a sitting position in the wheelchair. When she was pregnant, the second her water broke, she could feel movement and pain coming from parts of her body. She wanted to make sure Mer was as comfortable as she could be.

"Meredith Grey." Oliver shouted as he rounded the corner, a gown over his body and his scrub cap secured on his head. "Baby what are you doing? Oh! The baby's coming!"

Eliza chuckled as she was forced away from the wheelchair and her brother smothered his wife in kisses and questions about her pain. It was kinda cute, but it made her think all about how she was alone now. How the person who smothered her in questions about her health when she was giving birth, was long gone with no chance of returning. It turned the chuckle into a sniffle as she stepped even further away.

"El?" April questioned as she too rounded the corner, her own gown and scrub cap secured on her body. "I'm just on my way to update mine and Oliver's patients family, how about you join me?"

Eliza nodded and followed beside her friend. Her eyes slightly shinny from the tears she was trying to force away. As she walks, her hand moves away from the side of her body and towards the hand of the redhead walking beside her. With intertwined fingers, the two walk away, nothing but a tearful Eliza and a comforting April to keep each other close.

Atlas coed as he rocked his nephew in his arms. He soothed the newborn, as Oliver and Meredith shared a moment alone. The Grey woman had just woken up from surgery, one that they weren't actually expecting and a resident had started. It was also the first surgery that Bailey had completed since the previous weeks, where she had been too scared to even near the operating room.

"Yes, you're gonna be just like your uncle, little Bailey Grey Lee-Sunny." Atlas smiled so brightly, Derek who stood nearby, was afraid he might burst with glitter and rainbows.

"Hi baby." Derek stepped closer, reaching out and placing an arm around his husbands shoulder. "And this is little Bailey, huh? Hi handsome."

The baby only blinked as he was rocked back and forth, but that didn't matter to Atlas nor Derek, they were just happy enough to be here in the moment. There was a part of Derek, the part that stared down at the newborn, that wanted a child of his own. One that was either a product of him or Atlas, one that they used a donated egg to create a baby. But he knew that Atlas loved the idea of adopting, that it gave a child a home instead of somewhere where they may not be wanted.

"Would you ever consider having another baby?" Derek questioned, the corner of his lips quirked upwards. "Atly?"

"With you? Any day, love."

"Give me my nephew!" Miranda Bailey grinned as she stepped towards the two, gently scooping the now sleeping baby out of her persons arms. She made a noise softly as she rocked the baby, her eyes twinkling. "Oh, hi mini me."

"No, mini me!" Atlas whispered, his voice playful. "Mini heart surgeon."

"He's named after me." Bailey deadpanned, with a cocky grin. "He's a mini me — suck it."
