Jo yawned as she woke up to a new week. She had school in an hour and forty minutes. She jumped out of bed. She took a quick shower and brushed her teeth. As she was combing her hair, she heard something shatter. She dashed for the door but it was locked. She tried to remove her hand from the doorknob but it was stuck. Goosebumps displayed on her skin as she heard a sick laughter behind her."You didn't think you'd be rid of me that easily, did you?" The light voice held everything but innocence. Jo knew it all too well. "You're not real". She closed her eyes and told herself. Everywhere was strangely quiet for a moment so she opened her eyes. "Ah!" She screamed as the doll as standing on the doorknob. "Shh!" It whispered putting its plastic finger in front of its lips.
The doll's eyes were black. Divulged of any childhood charm. "We'll always be together", it's voice was screechy, "isn't that right?" Jo's eyes also turned black and unwillingly, she nodded her head. "Good girl", the plastic lips curled up in a smile, "you'll kill all your friends then save yourself for last". Jo jerked up from the nightmare. She was covered in sweat evidently but that wasn't what rattled her. The doll sat, legs crossed on her side table with a clock in its hands. "Tick tock" it whispered then laughed maniacally.
Angie heard screams in her head. She identified the voice as Jo's. There was something wrong with her. Angie could feel it. Unluckily, the book was with Jo so Angie couldn't do a research on how blood magic affected the person. She groaned as she remembered that she had school. She had her bath and dressed in a black and blue flannel shirt and blue jeans. She wore a pair of black sneakers and walked out of her room.
She was surprised when she met her father downstairs with her brothers. "What's wrong?" She asked. It was clear that something was not right. Mike ran into her arms and she could feel wetness. He hadn't cried on her since when he was seven and that was because of the monsters under the bed. Dave looked like he was going to crack. "Angie, it's nothing", her Dad replied, "Dave would drive you to school".
Angie looked at them again. She noticed a gap now. "Where's Mom?" She demanded. None of them answered. She asked again but with a harsher tone. "The Sheriff said she was attacked!" Mike cried out. The shock hit her first. "But she's gonna be okay", Angie denied the truth that had not been spoken, "why aren't we in the hospital?" "Angela", Connor said, "you need to go to school". Angie realized that her full name sounded foreign on his lips. She met his eyes fully. He didn't look in the least disturbed. Almost like he didn't care.
Mitchell woke up with a squeal. She knew it was René. She used a pillow to cover her ears but she remembered that she had school.
She got up and got ready. She took her bag and went down. She wanted to investigate the reason for the scream. She stopped in her tracks when she saw the man she wanted to abhor but couldn't. "Avery..." Tatiana didn't even get a chance to warn her. Mitchell had her index finger pointing accusingly at him. "What are you doing here?!" She shouted, "how dare you come back?"The man was no other person than her father, Drax Fletcher. He stood with his round face that showed no remorse for his actions. He was black skinned like her Mom but he didn't have the Black american dignity. "Avery baby", Tatiana tried again, "I can handle this. You have school and so does René. Go get breakfast". "No momma, I've been letting you handle this for a long time". "You had better respect your tone young lady". Drax warned. Mitchell eyed him and her blood boiled hotter. Tatiana could see the sparks at the tip of her fingers so she said sternly, "you have school baby and I would not repeat myself. No one wants a mess in the house". Mitchell huffed in defeat and stormed out.
Angie entered school like a zombie. She wasn't in the state of mourning; she was confused. She opened her locker to put books inside when Jason came up to her. "Hi". He said in a small voice. Angie had to furrow her brows at him. In all her years, Jason had always been loud. She noticed that he had dark circles around his eyes; another usual thing. "Can I talk to you?" He asked. Just then the bell rang. "Maybe later. I'll text you". She patted his shoulder and walked to Chem.
Angie could hardly concentrate and Jo took note of it. This was her chance to carry out her plans. She couldn't lose the only friends that she had. Jo switched seats with a bunch of people till she was right beside her. "Angie, you don't look so good". Jo said innocently. Angie forgot her anger and replied, "I just have a lot on my mind". "Like Mitchell?"
Angie faced her fully with shock. "Why would you suggest that?" Jo shrugged, "I don't know", she said, "maybe it's because you guys seem to be drifting apart. The whole feelings thing doesn't seem to be working".
"You have no idea what you're talking about".
"But I do. I see things and I've had a lot of time to think". Jo leaned closer and said spitefully, "if you don't like her, stop stringing her along". "Excuse me ma". Angie shot up her hand. As she was permitted to leave, she glared at Jo intensely. She sighed heavily against the bathroom sink. 'deep down you know I'm right' Jo's voice echoed in her head. "Get out of my head!" Angie said through gritted teeth. Jo laughed maniacally.
Angie was breathing heavily. She was mad at Jo. She knew that blood magic made people wonkers and she had to help her friend. Angie touched the mirror and a red line circled around her fingers. A thick smoke spread from the circle but never out of the mirror. Angie's eyes turned black as she floated inside of it.
She landed on her back. She groaned as she sat up. "Here I was thinking you were a pro". Daniel smirked and winked. Angie shot him a glare. "Don't pout, little one", Daniel twirled the cane in his hands, "I guess I understand why your mood would be prickly". "Of course you do". She rolled her eyes.
"Anyways, I'm sorry for your loss", his lips curled evilly, "but you're not sorry though".
"Because something seems wrong. She should be here, right?"
"Indeed but she isn't".
"How is that even possible? They found a body". Daniel scoffed, "oh please! You of all people should know what a glamour looks like", he explained, "if she could make me change my identity without my knowledge, what is a mutilated body?" Angie looked at him more intensely. She freed that spirit which meant her Mom should have lost her powers.
"I know what is on your mind". Daniel whispered with his breath against her ears. "How did she do it?" Angie asked boldly. "The answer is staring right at you". Suddenly, she was back in the bathroom and she was looking at the mirror. There was no one in the reflection but herself.
