Lin couldn't reverse the color so she put a glamour instead. Only those with magic would see her eyes. She and Maggie came outside when Angie was marching away. "She's just shy". They heard Mitchell say. Mitchell looked at them briefly before chasing after Angie. "Let's see what's up". Lin said. They were also stunned by the girl. She had her hair in pigtails. She wore a flannel shirt, blue jeans and sneakers. She might have been wearing glasses but she looked undeniably like Felicity. "Lin" Jo called out. "This is Tammy Chambers. She's new". Maggie refused to move closer. She wanted to but there was an invisible force that stopped her from getting near.
"Hiya!" Lin faked her excitement, "welcome to Bresten! You new to town?" "How'd you know?" Tammy chuckled, "we moved in during the weekend". "Nice. Well, it was nice meeting. I'm Lin Shin Ye, the one and only. She's Johanson Calley and this is Maggie Pitters". Tammy shook Jo and Lin. They both felt a pull. Even Jo quirked her eyebrows. "Your eyes are pretty unique". Tammy commented while facing Maggie. "Thanks". Maggie forced a smile. Jo also noticed that Maggie's eyes had changed. Lin gave her a stern look that meant 'we'll talk later'.
Jo nodded and offered to show Tammy around. "At least, we know a reason why you went to the graveyard". Lin told Maggie. "Something about her is wrong". Maggie frowned. "She is obviously magical. She saw past the glamour". "That's not what I mean", Maggie argued, "I couldn't come close to her. It was like we were in disagreement". "We can figure that out after classes. Jo and I even felt a tug on our powers". Maggie nodded and they went to Chemistry.
"Angie, can you chill?" Mitchell was tired of walking. "What?!" Angie had tears down her face already. "We can make sense of this". "How? My best friend that is dead is supposedly another person". "It might be a lookalike". "No lookalike can look that alike". Angie snapped.
She held her hair in her hands. "I have to see Daniel", she decided, "if someone came back from the dead he would know and he showed me a piece of clothing before. I can try to get answers. Anything!...that would make this easier". Mitchell hugged her and patted her back, "we'll crack the mystery", she said, "something tells me that something is wrong and that is not our Felicity".
"I appreciate the help but don't you have a class now?" Tammy asked worriedly. "I don't. Free period", Jo replied, "so where are you from?" "New Orleans".
"Cool. I have an Aunt there. Why did your parents move?"
"Work, of course. We kinda lost our house and some other things. Too expensive".
"That is awful". It was like she was trying to appeal to Jo's soft side. "It's cool. We're managing", Tammy brushed it off, "so how do things work here?" "There's no system. Many of us have known each other from childhood. It's a town where everyone knows everyone". "That's cool. My old school had a hierarchy system. I got bullied a lot". Again, Jo was made to feel sympathy for the girl.
Maggie couldn't concentrate in class. She never did but it was different this time. She used to form being a spoiled brat to get attention. Even the teacher noticed that she hadn't made an mean remarks to the students. "Miss Pitters, are you well?" He asked with concern. "Yeah", she sat up straight, "I'll pay attention. Sorry". It was clear that she hadn't even heard the question.
Lin picked up on her behavior. She brought out her phone and sent her a text.
L: You okay?
M: No. I can't focus.
L: Why?
M: It has something to do with that girl. My mind isn't settled. It's like it's scolding me for not understanding.
L: We'll get to the bottom of this. I promise.Maggie felt a bit relieved. The teacher saw them texting but he refused to speak a word as Maggie stopped looking pale. He was a kind person who was worried about his students. No matter how rotten their attitude may be. "Mr Dhawnten?" A random nerd in the back raised his hand. "Yes. Ask your question". Mr Dhawnten answered.
"From everything we studied in the gas laws, we know why things are the way they are. What if there is something in life that cannot be explained by these theories?" The boy asked. Turns out, he was more of a geek not nerd. "Well", Mr Dhawnten started, "some things have not be quantified by science. I was trained to teach you that science has all the answers but in reality, it doesn't. Science learns in itself everyday. If there is something that you don't understand or there's something you want to find, start small. Study the atoms, find a reaction and discover a new compound. You all in this room can discover your own theories".
Maggie was grateful that she had listened. Study the atoms, find a reaction and discover a new compund. That was the solution to her problems and she was determined to write her own theory after class. Lin caught the smile on Maggie's face and she was happy. Maggie had a lot on her plate. She was handling something far greater than them. Speaking of them, she needed to help her friends crack the mystery words of the book.
The classes went by and it was lunch. "Hello, you". Lin sat in front of Mitchell. "Where are the others?" She asked. "Angie's hiding out in the library. Jo is a tour guide to Tammy and you have been hanging out with Maggie". Mitchell accused. Lin sighed, "I'm the only one Maggie trusts", she explained, "she changed. Whatever we changed in history affected her. It gave her powers. Powers that we don't understand yet and she has been having meltdowns". "Is that why her eyes are like that?" Mitchell lowered her voice. "Yeah", Lin was also being quiet, "the warning she gave in the morning was one of them. She also woke up on Felicity's grave last night. It's not a coincidence that the Tammy girl popped the morning after".
"I knew something was weird about her. Angie said she was going to ask Daniel if he saw anything".
"Maggie's trying to figure it out too. This is so complicated". Lin threw a grape into her mouth. Mitchell shifted in her seat. She was fed up with everything. She was about to ask Lin about her recent strange attitude but Lin got a phone call. "Where are you?" She asked the caller. "We'll be there". The caller hung up.
"That was Maggie. She wants to see the book", Lin told Mitchell, "she didn't exactly say the book but she asked if we had a book on magic". "And you want to just hand it over?" Mitchell furrowed. Lin rolled her eyes, "we're not handing it over", she said, "we're going to be there with her. What if she can translate the story that changed? It has a lot to do with her anyways". Mitchell thought about it and agreed.
Angie picked out a random literature text. "A Midsummer's Dream. Good taste". A voice commented. She looked up to see Tammy. "Hey", she faked a smile, "sorry I ran off this morning. It was rude". "Don't sweat it". Tammy laughed. She's too confident for a new kid. Angie thought. "Where's Jo?" Angie asked. "I don't know. She left me a while ago".
Lin and Mitchell met Maggie in the girls' bathroom. "Where is it?" She asked quickly. Mitchell shared a look with Lin. She rolled her eyes and opened the page. "This is the history that changed". Maggie studied it. "The tale of Hasley Baker". Maggie read the heading. "You can read it?" Mitchell was shocked. "It's in English", Maggie shrugged, "why wouldn't I?" "It's not written in English". Lin pointed out. Maggie saw something that confirmed her fear. "The years. These were the years that kept changing on the tombstone".
Angie was enjoying her light conversion with Tammy. She felt like Felicity was really there. "Gossip flies around", Tammy suddenly said, "I heard I look like someone who died". Angie stopped, "from who?" She asked. "Just random people". Tammy shrugged. Angie was confused. No one would mention Felicity's death so casually.
"I learn things fast, you know?" Tammy continued talking. Angie was uncomfortable at this point. "Jo is too kind for her own good", she clicked her tongue, "it could get her hurt someday". "Where is she?" Angie asked firmly. 'Angie! Get Jo! Tammy is twisted. She might be hurt'. She heard Lin's words in her head.
"Jo is in a safe place", Tammy's eyes turned red like blood, "you'll be joining her soon".
