1987"You still haven't found what the key opens?" Sophia asked her. Nolan fondled with the keychain. "Nope. No clue". She answered. "And you don't wanna ask your Mom?" Tatiana shrugged, "I mean the letter was meant for her". "My Mom wasn't here when her mother died", Nolan snapped, "I don't think she deserves to know". Tatiana raised her hands in surrender. "Fine", she added, "just don't get it lost. I mean your gran gran clearly wanted whatever secret she had to be revealed".
The bell rang. "I have History report", Sophia sighed, "I'll see you guys later". They waved her off. "Before we head to Math", Tatiana was beaming, "I have something to tell you". "Must be something exciting. You're awfully cheery today". Nolan smirked. "Guess who has a boyfriend?" Tatiana broke the news in a singsong voice.
Nolan was happy for her friend. "Congratulations". She hugged her. "Thank you so much", Tatiana's smile was wider, "Connor asked me yesterday". Nolan's smile faded away. "Connor? The Connor?" She asked unimpressed.
" Yes. The one and only".
"The same guy who is rumored to have slept with half the population of girls in the school?"
"You know that's not true".
"You don't have proof that it isn't". Nolan crossed her arms. Tatiana was not happy about her friend's attitude. "We spoke about it, Nolan", she said, "he said it's not true". "And you believe him?" "Of course, I believe him! Why can't you be happy for me?" "I'm just trying to look out for you as a friend". "Some friend you turned out to be". Tatiana rolled her eyes and walked away.
Nolan didn't confront Tatiana all day. She kept giving her side looks. She saw her and Connor during lunch and they looked genuinely happy together. That made her blood boil. She left school unnoticed and went home. She knew that her parents wouldn't be back for work so she had the house to herself.
She threw her bag once she entered the house. She shrieked when it broke the lamp. She groaned and went to get a broom. There was a weird carving on the lamp stand. She squinted to observe it. Her eyes caught a small hole. A keyhole. She touched the keychain and her grandmother's words rang in her head. Someday you will find what it opens.
She removed the necklace and placed it inside. She heard a loud click. There was clear division of the top of the wooden stand. She used her fingers to push them to either sides. "Whoa!" She said as she saw the book. She picked it up carefully. It had a huge golden feather on the front cover. She could have sworn that she saw it glow. She was about to open it when an diary lock appeared from nowhere and clamped on it. "Holy crap!"
Present Day...
Mitchell felt cold water on her face again. She coughed out the one that almost choked her. "If I didn't know better, I'd think you wanted to get me wet for you", she said, "I don't swing that way for the record". "You're still a smart mouth", Lyon chuckled, "I'm impressed". "Don't flatter me". Mitchell mocked him.
"Time is running out Mitchell", he paced around her, "tell me what you know". "Do you need your ears checked or something?" She shot, "how many times do I gotta say I have no idea what you're talking about?" "I saw you that night at The Pound. I don't know what you did to those men by it was pretty unusual", Lyon said, "there were burning without any trace of fire". "It was dark. You probably got the wrong girl". She insisted.
Lyon's phone started ringing. Mitchell used the distraction to tug the rope. It was really tight. She checked around for any sharp objects but she didn't see any. "I'll have what you need by the end of the day", she heard him say. "Use any means necessary", the caller replied, "I need to set my plans in motion. The sooner, the better".
Lyon looked at Mitchell, "what if it's the wrong girl?" He asked skeptical about the whole thing. "I am certain", the female caller was adamant, "she's the one. I would never forget those that ruined my life". Lyon whispered the rest and the call ended. "You heard her", he smirked, "I can use any means necessary". He brushed her cheeks, "it would be a shame", he hushed his voice, "if I were to ruin this pretty face".
The door in the distance flew open. Mitchell used the chance. She hit his head with hers. He stumbled back trying to find his balance. Mitchell flicked her fingers and the flames burned the ropes. She was about to untie her legs when he grabbed her hair. Mitchell struggled and punched him against the neck.
He choked on his spit and moved back. Mitchell also fried the ropes on her legs and stood up. Lyon was up now. "You are one stubborn bitch", he pulled out a pen knife, "so let's play your game". Mitchell was a bit worried. She couldn't fight him with magic because she wanted to keep their secret plus she wasn't good with her fists either.
In the blink of an eye, she heard a bone crushing sound and Lyon was falling down unconscious. "I always wanted to do that". Lin smiled. "Mitchell!" Jo ran to hug her. "Let's get out of here first". They all nodded and ran out of the uncompleted building.
"That was a close one", Mitchell was catching her breath, "thanks guys". "What did he want with you?" Jo asked. "He was working for someone", she recounted the phone conversation, "this person obviously knows about magic. She's not a very big fan". "Maybe it has something to do with Angie's Mom". Lin suggested. Mitchell suddenly noticed that Angie wasn't with them. "Where's Angie?" She asked. Lin and Jo looked at each other hesitant to give an answer.
Angie figured that February, 1986 would have something to do with her. She was in her basement digging at all.her Mom's things from high school. She saw a photo frame that wasn't in the open before. It was her Mom and an older woman. From the eyes, she could tell it was her great grandmother.
She checked the cardboard box and found a napkin. She unwrapped it and found a keychain with a letter. She squeezed it and let her eyes turn into slits. She could see the events of that day. "Granny!" She could hear her Mom scream. She pulled out of the memory and opened the letter.
She read the contents. "This was meant for her mother", Angie shook her head, "so why did she keep it?" Angie didn't understand why her Mom would try to hold on to what wasn't hers. She folded the paper and put it in her pocket. She wanted to do more searching when she heard footsteps.
"The last time I did this you were scared". Mike said. She just remembered that the memory spell was now temporary. "Mike" she said in a soft voice as she stood up. "I promise I won't freak out", he begged, "just please don't do that again". "This is for your own good", she said, "I would never forgive myself if you got hurt".
"I won't". He moved closer as if to prove his point. "I didn't get it before", he continued talking, "your strangeness, refusing to come home...you didn't wanna hurt us". "Oh Mike" she crouched down and patted his head, "you've always been so brave". Mike smiled to himself.
Angie's eyes became glossy and he frowned. He discovered it late though. "I'm sorry". She whispered. A blue smoke came from her mouth. His eyes turned blue and he fainted. "I'm really sorry", she repeated, "I can't bare to lose you".
Her phone vibrated. It was from Maggie. She didn't understand the message so she dialed the number. "You text makes no sense", she said once Maggie picked, "what do you mean we caused more damage?" "I can't explain it either", Maggie said, "something is wrong with nature. I thought it was calling for the vengeful spirit. I was wrong". "Where are you?" "At the clearing. Angie, you have to hurry. Something is terribly wrong".
