Earlier...Candice was still driving when her phone rang. She had connected it to the car's Bluetooth. "Yes honey". She said after taking a glance at the caller ID. Silence replied her. "Hello? Rex? Are you there?" She asked with furrowed brows. There was shuffling in the background before Rex spoke.
"I'm glad you picked". He said panting. "Yeah. What's going on? I'm driving home. Let's just say the talk with the Hampers was a..." "Candice! You cannot go home!" He cut her short. Candice stepped on the brakes. "Rex, where are you?" She questioned.
"The meeting was ambushed. We're currently running".
"Ambushy? By who?!"
"Look, I love you okay?". "Rex Anthony Tryler! Don't you dare say those last words to me!" Candice yelled with tears in her eyes. "I love you! I love you", Rex chanted as his heart beats fast. "I love you too". She sobbed into the phone. A loud bang went off in the background. "Rex! Rex! REX!" She screamed as the line went dead.
Candice was shivering. He couldn't be dead. She wouldn't believe that he was dead. Her mind went straight to her kids. They were unprotected in school. She wiped her face and started the car. She wasn't going to lose everyone tonight.
Presently...
"How is it even possible that they are fully transformed?" Jo asked Grayson. "I have no idea", he shook his head, "and they're not all Alphas. She used magic on them". "We're deciding now", Lin snapped, "I vote for attack. They can't be saved". "Think of the Alcoves, Lin". Mitchell said taking a slow step backwards, "Angie saved them. She can do it again". "We can't just wait for her to come back", Veronica countered, "are you even seeing the bodies on the floor?"
"It's also stupid to run", Jason added, "they'll just follow". "We're clearly short of choices and Angie might need our help". Lin didn't want to pull that card but Mitchell was annoying her with her savior complex. "I can try blinding them". Jo suggested. "I don't think you've noticed but they are mostly using their ears and nose. They see what their master see and I think that crazy bitch is still playing hide and seek". Veronica said.
Angie was speeding through the shadows. This was her first time running through the shadows so it was very difficult. Nolan stopped in front of their house. "Home sweet home". She smirked. Angie was breathing heavily behind her. "I can make dinner", Nolan faced her, "like we used to. Everything could go back to normal".
Angie balled her hands. Nolan stayed quiet too. She was wondering why Angie hadn't answered. "Nothing to say to your mother?" Nolan smirked. Angie closed her eyes to stop her mouth from any outbursts. "If you're not going to talk, I can just walk away". Nolan shrugged.
She raised her leg but was blown back by a force she didn't recognize. Angie stretched her hands and Nolan was floating in the air. Angie swung Nolan into the house. Nolan grunted at the impact. Angie did it several times before Nolan broke a hole at the side.
Nolan's head was busted. Her left shoulder was dislocated and the flesh was gone from her knees. Angie should have been disgusted at the sight but all she could feel was anger. She stretched her hands and Nolan was in the air again. She was about to sling her into the wall when Nolan cracked a smile.
Angie was confused. "Do it", Nolan egged her, "kill me. You'll feel so much better". "Shut up!" Angie growled. "Oh please! Spare me the intimidation", Nolan chuckled, "you want to kill? Go ahead".
"I said shut up!"
"Can you see how easy it is to fall victim? Blood is a thirst from the magic. That what it craves".
"I am nothing like you". "In a few minutes, you will be", Nolan laughed, "there is no difference between one death and the death of a thousand. You'll be a murderer". The words hit Angie and she released her hands. It was then the sight began to irritate her. The blood, the smell of death, the fear...this wasn't her. Without thinking twice, Angie bolted out of the house.
The police sirens broke the spell on the wolves and they howled. "That's not a good sign!" Lin screamed. One of the wolves jumped on Grayson. The other wolves pounced as well. Mitchell quickly put up a shield to cover them. "Grayson!" Jason shouted from inside.
The wolf clawed his shoulder leaving a huge wound. Grayson lost control and his golden eyes shone. He used his fangs to bite the neck of the animal. The wolf stumbled back but lunged a second time. "You have to kill it!" He heard Veronica shout.
She was right. The other wolves would eventually give up on trying to break the shield and they will tear him apart. He extended his claws and scratched the face of the wolf while enduring a hit in the leg. He used strength to push the creature forward.
Meanwhile, Mitchell was getting weaker. "I can't hold it for long!" She grunted. Lin took in deep breaths. "Break it". She told Mitchell. Jo looked at her like she had grown two heads. "For goodness sake, bream the damn shield!" She yelled impatiently. "Do you have a death wish, Lin?" Jo asked. "Mitchell is getting weaker. If this shield comes down, she won't be able to fight", Lin explained, "Veronica is right. It's either them or us".
Jo turned to Mitchell. Her face was pale. The shield was really draining. "Break it Mitchell". She whispered. Mitchell released her hands and fell to the ground. Lin formed an energy ball and blasted two from them. Veronica whipped out her knives and attacked one. Jason was using any tool he could see to defend himself.
Candice jumped out of her car once she reached the parking lot. She could see squad cars around. She was rushing forward when two deputies stopped her. "Ma'am, you're gonna have to step back", one of them said politely, "we're trying to evacuate everyone". "My kids are inside!" She yelled. "We understand what you're going through, ma'am but you have to let us do our jobs".
Candice stopped struggling. "I am so sorry for this". She muttered before stepping on one of them. She went under the yellow tape and ran into school. She could see cops on both sides of the hallways. Students with torn limbs were scattered around. These were the ones that escaped narrowly. Candice couldn't help but panic. She couldn't lose her children too. Not in one night.
The fight was tough but they were tougher. Jo raised a wolf and slammed it into the ground. It left a big hole in the ground a couple broken bones in the animal. Grayson was moving faster though. He had killed three out of the dozen that was left. One leapt onto his back and bit his neck. He grabbed it and slashed its neck open.
Suddenly, he's head started aching. Grayson covered his ears and howled. "Grayson!" Jason screamed and ran closer to him. The wolves actually shivered in fear and stepped back. Grayson was still screaming. His skin was changing to fur. His hands were shrinking and so were his legs. In less than a minute, Grayson was gone and a huge navy blue wolf stood in the room. His golden eyes faded. A bright red shone instead.
The girls were stunned. "Jason, your eyes". Veronica gasped. Truly, Jason's eyes were equally red. The wolves fled out the window through which they came. "Kids!" Candice yelled. "Mom!" Veronica ran into her arms. Candice inspected her. "I'm fine. We're all fine. Just a few scratches". Veronica gave a weak smile.
Candice turned to Jason and wolf Grayson. Tears welled up in her eyes. "You're the Alpha now, honey". She said through silent sobs. "How is that possible?" Lin came forward, "Rex is the Alpha". Jason looked at Grayson when he understood the message. Jo gave Lin a quick signal. "Oh shit" she mumbled once she also realized. Rex was dead.
Lin heard the approaching footsteps. "Everyone join hands!" She quickly said. The cops ran in. "We need a couple of stretchers here over". One of them said into his walkie talkie. "We have to get out of here", Lin whispered, "so stay close". They all moved cautiously out of the building and past all the policemen. They stuffed themselves into Candice's car and drove off.
Angie paused to catch her breath. She had been running in no particular direction. She suddenly remembered that her friends were still in school. She was about to head there when she heard Jo's voice in her head. 'We're at the Trylers. Angie please answer if you're getting this'. 'I'll be there' she gave a short reply before blending into the shadows.
She pounded on the front door. It was opened by Lin who attacked her with a hug. Angie broke down on Lin's shoulders. "I'm so sorry". She apologized. Lin was confused. "Sorry for what?" "I couldn't do it", Angie continued, "I couldn't kill her. I'm not a monster. I'm not her". Lin frowned. She wasn't happy that Nolan was still alive but she sympathized with her friend. "It's fine, Angie", Lin said with a fake smile, "we have other things to worry about". "Rex is dead, isn't he?" Angie guessed. Lin just nodded and closed the door behind them.
