Lin stumbled back. It was like a plane took off and crashed right in the middle of her heart. "Hello? Hello?" Maggie was still on the phone, "what did Mitchell say?" Lin picked the phone with shaky hands and said, "I'll call you back". Mitchell walked liked a zombie back to the library. Lin had run."Angie? Angie? You have to wake up now. This isn't your bed". Lin gave a short laugh. Angie didn't stir or turn. Lin hugged the body and wept. Mitchell's heart broke over and over. She finally decided that it was too much. She let the tears drop like a waterfall as she ran home. Mitchell didn't care that it was getting dark. All she wanted was to be away from the pain. Tatiana was about to come find the girls. She was worried since she hadn't gotten a call from any of them. She opened the door to see a battered Mitchell. Mitchell attacked her with a hug and cried on her shoulders.
Lin glared at the monster responsible for all this. She had murder on her mind. She clenched her fists and left the place. She remembered that she hadn't untied Jo. Jo was already struggling with the ropes and her natural pigmentation was coming back. "I am so sorry". Lin apologized. "It's okay", Jo said, "you just delayed that monster's death". "We can't kill her or it". "What?! She killed Angie! Are you really going to let it go?!"
"I'm not letting anything go!" Lin yelled, "this is not I want too but to ensure that she doesn't harm anyone else, we have to find out why she came". Jo grumbled to herself. She didn't like this plan one bit. She didn't like it at all.
"If this is what being dead feels like", Angie said to Daniel in the shadow world, "it doesn't feel different". "That's because you're not dead". He answered. "Then what am I? A ghost?"
"Ghosts don't exist. You're a wanderer".
"A what?"
"A wanderer. Your soul came out of your body before it took its final breath".
"So I'm physically dead?"
"Not yet. Your body can still be patched up. Once it is, you would willing float back inside". "Why didn't you do the same?" Angie asked crossing her arms. "The fire, remember?" He shrugged it off. "So I am putting them into pain for nothing?" Angie was sad about this. She could hear Mitchell's sobs in her head loudly. "It's not for nothing because they could bury your body and then it decomposes...poof! You're actually dead". Daniel snickered. "How can you be so cheery about this?" He was getting on her nerves.
"Oh please! Save your glare for the monster who killed you", he sat on a rock, "you are the one who is bothered because you have people who cared. All I got was a page in the newspaper calling it an 'unfortunate accident'". He scoffed and added, " such ridiculous people". Angie felt bad for accusing him.
She went to sit beside him. "I saw what you did with the books", she blurted, " why? I'm sure it took a lot of strength". "It was the right thing to do". He shrugged. "You're lying". This took him by surprise. She was obviously going to accuse him of lying but this time there was certainty in her voice.
"There is a poem by William Makepeace Thackeray about a man who had a pigtail hanging behind his head", Daniel was staring into space, "the man tossed and turned to get the pigtail to not hang behind him but he didn't succeed. At last, he had to accept it and combed the pigtail once in a while". "How does that have to do with anything?" Angie wasn't getting the point of the story.
"You four have become a baggage that I am most accustomed too. The least I can do is save your miserable lives for the sake of peace and quiet in this gloomy realm". He vanished before Angie found her tongue. She wanted to tell him that he was lying again. She could tell.
The monster woke up and started screaming. It sounded more like a cry to them. Jo grabbed a dictionary and knocked her out with it. "I still vote for killing her". Jo huffed. "We will. We need answers first and that has to do with Maggie". Lin replied wrapping Angie's body in a blanket she conjured.
The doors burst open and Maggie came in panting. She caught her breath and asked for an update. "That's not possible". She replied when they spoke about Angie. "What do you mean?" Lin questioned. "There is an imbalance in nature", she explained, "that's why I got here late. The earth is crying for a soul. There are two souls alive right now". "That makes no sense. Do you need to touch her body to confirm that she is dead?" Jo was annoyed.
Maggie did as Jo suggested. She saw Angie in deep thoughts in the shadow world. Her eyes changed to the gray ones again. She peeled off the cloths that covered the wound. She touched the place and vines grew from her hands and stitched it up. Angie unconsciously let her fingers brush the injured place.
"It's healing". Jo noticed. "Yes", Maggie answered, "she is currently wandering. She could not return to her body because it was weak and she couldn't move on because her spirit was fully alive". "Lin, did you hear that? She's..." Jo had just realized that Lin wasn't in the room with them.
Lin had gotten a call from her Mom that she was needed at home. She hurried back before things got out of hand. "Here". Tatiana gave Mitchell a cup of tea. "Now tell me what happened exactly". Mitchell took a sip and recounted everything from that morning. She gripped the cup tighter when she got to the part of Angie's death.
"It'll be fine. I promise". Tatiana hugged her daughter. "How? How can it possibly get better? It's not like we can bring her back from the dead". She paused to think about it. Tatiana saw the glint in her eyes and shook her head. "No! Absolutely not! It's dangerous". Tatiana was scared that Mitchell would do something she would regret. "What if it was Dad or someone you love?" Tatiana hesitated with her answer and Mitchell walked outside for fresh air. Tatiana sighed and dialed a number. "Things have gone south", she told the person, "we have to act quick".
Mitchell was looking at the dark sky. She had always dreamed of a night when she and Angie would lie on the grass and tried to count the stars. She wiped the fresh tears that dropped. That was always going to a dream to her. She was distracted from her mourning by noises from next door. She knew it was Lin's house. She wanted to find out why.
"So your body is going to be fully patched in a couple of hours". Daniel's voice made her shriek. " Didn't mean to frighten you". He shrugged. "Indeed" Angie rolled her eyes. "You have something to tell me I presume". "I know you were lying earlier", she said sternly, "and I know you have an idea why we have a bond". Daniel frowned, "I expected a thank you for saving your lives and nothing more", he sounded angry, "about the bond...some secrets are meant to be locked away forever".
Mitchell saw the black car again. Lin had a dark look in her eyes. She wore a sport bra and a pair of shorts. Her hair was packed into a ponytail and she had removed her earrings. Mitchell was hiding in the bushes around Lin's house. She had to hold her mouth to prevent herself from making any sound. The scars on Lin's head and arms were exposed. What is going on here? Mitchell was getting scared. She had never seen Lin look so... outlawed.
Lin was pushed into the car by two men. Not once did her look break. Mitchell watched them drive off but this time she followed them.
