1987"Well, we ditched the coach", Daniel said as they were walking through the woods, "what do we do now?" Nolan was frowning in deep thoughts. She had been very distracted lately. "Whoa! You don't look so good", Daniel held her hands, "maybe we should sit down". Nolan nodded with a weak smile.
Daniel saw a cabin in a distance. "That looks like where the ranger stays", he told her, "we could rest before I get help". Again, Nolan just nodded. Daniel put her arm around his neck and they moved. It wasn't as far as they had imagined. Daniel placed Nolan on the stairs. "I'll go find the ranger".
Nolan began hearing the voices again. She had been hearing it for weeks now. 'Why did you kill her?' 'She loved you'. 'You're a monster'. 'You abandoned your only friend'. 'They will be abandon you too'. 'They know you're a monster'. "Stop!" She screamed closing her ears.
Daniel heard the scream and it made him panic. What if she was attacked by animals? He thought. "Nolan!" He yelled once he saw her. She skin was red like she had fallen into boiling water. "Nolan! Nolan! Focus on me!" He held her hand trying to bring her back.
Nolan opened her eyes and they were black. She was staring at something above his head. It was a black mist. 'Kill him and you can have all the magic in the world'. The voice whispered. 'Do you want to always share everything with him?' 'It was because you shared him with your grandmother. She's dead because of him'.
Nolan glared at Daniel. "Nolan, you have to snap out of it". He pleaded. "I have to kill you", she cried, "I can't share everything with you". "This isn't you talking". He shook his head. "This is me! I'm a monster!" She screeched.
A force of wind blew him backwards. Daniel hit his back against a tree. He groaned for a while but stood up. Nolan attacked him. She held his neck and squeezed. Daniel did a manover and pushed her aside. He was trying his best not to hurt her. "Nolan, I know you're in there. Fight it!" He yelled.
Nolan fell on the floor. He threaded with care when approaching her. Her skin was returning to it's color. He touched her and he was sucked into another world. Everywhere was gloomy and it reecked of death. "Nolan!" He yelled. "I'm over here!" She replied from behind him.
"What happened to you back there?" He asked ultimately confused. "Nothing", she faked a smile, "just a little magic malfunction". "You call that little?" He was angry, "you almost killed me". "Oops! But you're not dead are you? No". She smirked.
Daniel ignored her strangeness and looked around. "Where are we?" He questioned. "The Shadow World", she replied, "I am actually glad you brought us here. The flesh truly is weak". "You're not my sister". He sneered. "And you're not dead. Seems like we both have work to do".
Nolan groaned as she woke up. Her head was hurting badly. She surveyed her surrounding. The woods? She wondered. "Nolan!" The scream almost triggered something. She knew someone was calling her in a similar manner earlier. "Are you okay?" It was Irene that helped her up, "Coach noticed that you were missing and he said we should come get you". "Why would you leave the class on your own?" Sophia scolded.
On my own? She thought I wasn't on my own. "Where's my brother?" She asked them. "Are you sure you didn't hit your head?" Irene raised her eyebrows at her. "Guys! Come quick!" Kimberly yelled. The four of them ran to where she was. "Oh my gosh!" Celine covered her eyes.
Nolan eyed the body of the ranger. Something about him screamed disgust. "I have something to tell you guys", she sighed, "not out here though". "Let's go back before we all get detention". Sophia suggested. Nolan didn't move. She bent over the body. There was a photo sticking out of his pocket. She removed it and folded it in her pocket. "You coming?" Irene called her attention. "Yeah". She faked a smile.
Present Day...
"The hospital is far on foot!" Lin complained. "I can get my Mom's car", Mitchell suggested, "I'll meet you guys on the third block". They nodded and started running. "What do you think could have happened to her?" Jo wondered. "I don't think it's only her". Angie was doubtful that Celine was the only victim. "If it's all five of them", Jo said, "then this is really bad".
Nolan sashayed into the hospital ward. "This isn't exactly how I planned our reunion". She said to the unconscious women. She moved closer to Kimberly's bed. "They even cuffed you to the bed", Nolan chuckled, "they think you're something".
She went over to Tatiana, "we used to be best friends", she frowned, "until you stole what was rightfully mine. We could have been through this together. Having the world tremble under our feet but no...you fell in love". She looked at the remaining three and shook her head, "you were just the pawns", she shrugged, "weaklings...that I put under my wing. Yet, you thought you could outshine the master".
She went back to Kimberly. "I told you a little secret and you told somebody else", her tone was harsh, "who? Who?! Answer me!" "Guys, I think that's the ward". Nolan stood straight when she heard the voice. As usual, the kids were here to save the day. "I'll be back", she said, "besides, torture before death is always the fun part".
As soon as the door opened, Nolan vanished. "You were right Angie", Jo was in disbelief, "they're all here". Angie was scanning around. Something had ticked her senses and that could only be the work of one woman.
"Can you heal them?" Mitchell asked Maggie. Maggie observed their bodies. She placed a light touch on Tatiana's forehead. "Memories", she whispered, "all hope is not lost". "What?" Before Lin could follow up with another question, Maggie was out the door. "I would never understand her". Mitchell shook her head.
Jo clicked her fingers and a bunch of files appeared in her hands. She read through them with wide eyes. "What's that?" Angie came closer to have a look. "It's their medical files", she explained, "according to the scans, there is a multiplication of cells in their cerebrum. Which is highly unusual. It's spreading at a high speed and could cause a combustion".
She looked up to see her friends staring. "What?" "Not to be mean", Lin stepped forward, "but you were speaking to yourself". "You lost me at cells". Mitchell confessed. "Don't you guys listen to anything in Chem or Bio?" She was frustrated. They just shrugged. "Fine! Cells make up everything in the body. When it comes to the brain, the increase or decrease of certain cells can cause a damage in the functioning of the brain or the body as a whole".
The girls were paying rapt attention. "In their case, the cells are multiplying a hundred times faster". "What cells exactly?" Angie asked. "The part of the brain that controls thinking. It could be precedent or past". "Memories", Lin deciphered, "they're memories are coming back". "Yes", Jo confirmed, "at a rate that could blow their minds. Literally". "How many memories did they lose?" Mitchell frowned. "It seems like we're about to find out".
