1986Nolan put her face in her palms. "Nolan!" She raised her head to see who called her. "You!" She spat grabbing him by the collar, "this is all your fault!" "Nolan! Please...you need to rest". Daniel tried to plead. "No! You killed her! You killed Granny!" She continued yelling as the tears flowed more profusely. Daniel allowed her to punch him on the chest. He endured it till she eventually hugged him.
"Shh! It's gonna be okay", he stroked her hair, "I'm here for you. We're gonna stick together". "It wasn't her time". Nolan whispered. "I know". He petted her in the empty hallway of the hospital. They stood in that moment for several minutes until he decided it was time to go home.
Nolan walked into the house like a stranger. She didn't recognize it any more. This wasn't a home to her. Everything reminded her of her grandmother. "Granny! Look at what I did". A younger Nolan once said showing off a very awful stick drawing. Grandma laughed and said, "looks like we have an artist in the family".
Nolan smiled weakly as she remembered all the times when she would push her grandmother in the rocking chair. "Granny, this makes you feel young again doesn't it?" She would ask. " Yes, my dear ", Grandma chuckled, "I feel like a hearty child again. Just like you my dear".
Nolan slowly approached the stairs. She let out a small laugh when she remembered falling and hurting her arm. "Granny, it hurts". She cried. "Well that is a reminder that you don't slide down the railings". Grandma scolded. Nolan remembered everything like it was yesterday. There was no piece of furniture in the house that didn't not make her miss her grandmother more.
She opened the door to her room and tiptoed inside. She hugged her legs as she sat on the floor. "Hey" Daniel said not expecting a reply, "Mom and Dad called. They said they'd be here tomorrow". Nolan didn't even bat an eyelash at him. He sighed and dropped her phone beside her, "it's been ringing none stop", he told her, "your friends are worried".
Nolan picked the device when he left. Through her bloodshot eyes, she could see the missed calls and voice mails. She clicked on the last one sent by Tatiana. "Look Nolan, I get what you're going through", Tatiana said, "it sucks. There's nothing worse than loss but please, talk to someone. You need it. You can call me when you get this. I'll always be here for you".
Nolan dropped the phone on bed. She didn't want to talk to anyone. At least, not now. She looked up to her grandmother's dresser and saw a reflecting object. She wiped her face and stood up. She moved closer to the mirror. An object was reflecting light into it.
She turned around to the top of a wardrobe. She was meticulous with her steps. She reached for the object. As she pulled it out, a paper fell with it. It was necklace in the shape of a key. She sat on the bed and unfolded the paper. It read:
Dear Asha,
If you are reading this, it means I am long gone. You are permitted to mourn but it won't do you any good. You'll just have a headache.
Anyways, the keychain is a gift that I want you to treasure with all your heart. Someday you will find what it opens and when you do, protect yourself from the allure of darkness.
There are so many things that are happening in Bresten. Secrets passed on from generation to generation. The cycle cannot be broken. Just like how I have lived and died, you must do the same too. For everything that has a beginning, has an end. Lest we break nature we ought to tend.
With love,
