"we're here." may said before they got out of the car.
"it's a miracle we found the place. every other street in this blasted city is peachtree." enzo said as they walked up the front steps.
"these look old. like four months old." caroline said seeing there were flyers and mail on the front step.
enzo knocked at the door and when he tried to open the door, it was locked.
"seventy years in a cage. you'd think i'd have learned to pick a lock by now." enzo said before pulling the doorknob off and the door opened.
they saw a redhead who was on her knees around a circle of salt.
"do you think that's hazel?" may asked.
"red hair. that's her. she's a witch." caroline said before her and may tried to walk in but they were stopped because they needed to be invited in.
"this is fantastic." may said.
"she must own the house." caroline said.
"not for long." enzo said throwing the doorknob at her head, killing her.
"why did you do that? she was our only lead." caroline shouted.
"exactly. and i am a murderous vampire. surprise." enzo said before they finally entered the house.
-
"she was in a bloody trance. unable to answer questions. i don't see why you're mad. i'm only doing what's necessary to save your friend because you won't." enzo said.
"oh, boy." may said.
"you don't think i'm up for this?" caroline asked him.
"this being the cold blooded murder of an innocent man. you can hardly say the word. how do you expect to actually do it?" enzo asked her.
"i'm sorry. is this all supposed to be easy? you barely know me, so let me reintroduce myself. hi, my names caroline forbes, and i am a good vampire... and i don't just go around killing people." caroline told him.
"you've got me all wrong, caroline forbes. i'm not judging you, i'm preparing you. i've seen soldiers, men trained to kill, look their enemy in the eye and freeze up on the battlefield. a hesitation that usually costs them their lives." enzo said.
may couldn't believe how much of a life enzo had lived after she left him.
"well, last time i checked, this isn't war, and i'm not a soldier. but stefan is one of the best people that i know. and when it comes to saving his life, yes, i will do just about anything..." caroline began but she stopped.
they all went quiet because they could hear a heartbeat in the distance.
"do you guys hear that?" may asked.
"what's that sound?" caroline asked.
"the telltale heart." enzo said.
they followed the sound down into the basement where they saw tom avery laying on a cot. he was unconscious and surrounded by salt.
"why would a witch go to such lengths to keep a man alive and off the gird for four months?" enzo asked.
"four months ago, silas died. the original stefan ganger." caroline told him.
