enzo informed them that lily's friends from the prison world were out. the problem with this was that these friends weren't normal friends, they were part siphoner and part vampire.
being a vampire they had a constant source of power so they were ruthless vampires.
enzo pulled up by a shipping container and stefan got out of the car to talk to his mom.
may looked over at enzo and he placed his hand on top of hers. he could tell by the look on her face that all the chaos was hard on her.
caroline saw the two of them holding hands but she didn't say anything. she knew enzo had a soft spot for may and she wanted them to be happy.
after stefan talked with his mother, he learned everything. lily gave kai her blood so now he was a heritic. part vampire part witch.
bonnie found a tape kai had left her and in it he told her that he linked her life to elena's and that the only way elena would wake up is if bonnie was dead.
while kai was leaving the wedding, he got attacked by tyler lockwood who, had just triggered his werewolf curse again.
after having to put liv out of her misery and needing to heal himself, tyler triggered his curse and he went after kai, biting him.
enzo drove stefan, may and caroline to the hospital to go and see elena.
"where's damon?" caroline asked.
"bonnie tracked kai. he went to go beat the sleeping spell out of him." stefan said.
"stefan... this whole thing with elena. if they can't break the spell... are you gonna be okay?" caroline asked him.
"are you?" stefan asked her.
"of course not. but when she wakes up, she'll still be my best friend... after bonnie's lived a long and happy life. but you... you were soulmates. and i want to make sure that you're okay." caroline said.
"yeah, elena came into your life and you instantly connected... that's so rare." may told him.
"i don't think elena necessarily came into my life to be my soulmate. i mean, she was. we loved each other. but she was also the only person i've ever met... who actually believed that my brother was worth loving. and she reminded me that i used to believe that about him too. and her faith in him... it brought damon and me back together. and yeah, i... i loved her. more than i ever thought i could love somebody else. but i think in the end... i needed him more then i needed her. is that why... you feel you need to stay away from me? is it because you think i haven't moved on?" stefan asked as he locked eyes with caroline.
"no, stefan, i... i'm sure it sounds like i'm making a million excuses... but you and i... i can't do this right now. i'm sorry." caroline said before she walks out of the room.
may looked at stefan and she grabbed his hand, holding it in hers.
"give it time." may said as stefan nodded his head and the two of them looked down at elena.
"yeah." stefan replied quietly.
"i can't believe this is happening." may said looking at elena who was sleeping peacefully.
when damon finally found kai, he knocked his head right off his body. he was dead for good.

everyone gathered at the salvatore house so they could say their goodbyes to elena.
they put her in a coffin but they left it open so they could see her. damon had put her in a beautiful blue dress.
"okay, let's do this. you two are up first." damon said looking over at bonnie and caroline.
they went up to elena and bonnie wasn't sure how to get into her head.
"it's easy, bon. you just take her hand... close your eyes... and let her into your thoughts." caroline said as the two girls held elena's hand.
after caroline and bonnie went, matt took his turn to say goodbye. after matt was finished alaric walked up to elena.
"alaric." they heard a voice speak up.
alaric turned around and he saw a familiar face.
"jeremy." alaric said.
"i wanted to be here sooner. i wanted to be here for the wedding." jeremy told him.
"i'm glad you weren't." alaric said giving him a hug.
after they pulled away, jeremy walked up to his sister and he took her hand. after jeremy's moment was over, tyler went over to have his.
"you're up, may." damon told her as she nodded her head.
she walked up to the coffin and looked down, seeing elena. she grabbed her hand and closed her eyes.
when she opened them, she saw she was in the grill and elena was looking at her, smiling.
"you're pretty peachy for a girl in a coma." may said as elena hugged her tightly.
"i wanted us to be at the grill because this is technically where we met for the first time." elena said as may nodded her head.
"yes, that's right. i didn't approve of you back then but stefan told me to give you a chance and i can gladly say that it was a chance worth taking." may said as the two girls smiled at each other.
"may, for as long as i've known you... you've been on your own. i think it's time for you to be happy." elena said as may let out a sigh.
"the timing of it all..." may began but elena cut her off.
"it'll never be perfect. and i know you're worried about enzo and stefan fighting but i think once he sees how happy you are, it won't matter. you deserve a love that consumes you, may. you searched for it your whole life so i think it's time to live it." elena said as may smiled.
"i'm not sure what to say." may admitted with some tears in her eyes.
"just promise me you'll let yourself be happy... that you'll let yourself fall in love." elena said as may nodded her head.
"i promise you." may replied as the two girls hugged.
after may let go of elena's hand, she was back in the salvatore house.
stefan got his moment to say goodbye and then everyone left.
stefan and damon brought her coffin to their family crypt where damon had a moment alone to say goodbye to the love of his life.
