caroline called may to tell her about how damon crashed the funeral and tried turning matt.

"it was awful. like damon's desperate for us all to hate him." caroline explained.

"wow, i'm sorry i couldn't be there. i wanted to be... i just... i can't leave enzo." may explained.

"please tell me it's going better than it did yesterday." caroline asked her.

"somehow it's worse. drying him out didn't work. starving him didn't work. i played the guitar. i told him our history. it's like talking to a brick wall. what did it for you, when you had your humanity off? what made you break free?" may asked her.

"i had to face my biggest fear. that i wasn't worth loving anymore. and that my mom would be ashamed of me. i had to be reminded how much she loved me, ana then i had to want to live up to that. is that helpful?" caroline asked her.

"very, thank you." may replied.

"keep me posted. and don't worry about not being here. we'll give tyler a proper goodbye when this is all over." caroline told her.

"yeah, whenever that will be." may said in a non hopeful voice.

"soon. i hope." caroline replied.

"i hope so, too." may replied before she hung up the phone.

she heard enzo approach the front door since may was on the step.

"dead friend problems? my heart bleeds for you. all this trauma. the burden of always having to protect everyone. why don't you just take me off your plate? hmm." enzo asked her.

"why don't you just turn your humanity back on, hmm?" may asked, showing him the same attitude.

"can't we both agree that my humanity was a hindrance? i was angry, depressed. a-a tragic poet full of darkness. where's the fun in reverting back to an inferior version of myself?" enzo asked her.

"you know, you were a lot of amazing things, too. you were loyal, creative, and wildly romantic." may told him but he just cringed.

"well, you know, even if i did turn it on, it's too late for you. you missed tyler's funeral. abandoning your friends in their time of need. that, my dear, is cold." enzo said.

"i'll be back." may told him before she walked away.

"i'll still be here. thanks to you." enzo told her.

may went out for a walk and she felt defeated. it was times like these that made her really miss lexi. she knew that lexi would know what to do next.

-

when may came back, she saw enzo was drinking champagne and dancing to a record.

"happy new years, love. come on, dance with me. hmm? like we used to. oh, i remember now, all the lights, the music, mmm." enzo said taking another sip of his drink.

"screw you." may replied.

"you didn't buy it? not just a little?" enzo asked her.

"nope. but i'm glad you found a new way to amuse yourself." may replied.

"yeah, sorry. can't help it. romance... the slow burn of it all. oh, it was so unbelievably saccharine. and for what? i kept you safe for three years and then you tried to get yourself killed." enzo said.

"i'm gonna get through to you. i'm gonna use your darkest fears to pull you out of this." may told him.

"okay, well, i'm a complicated person. in my 140 years on this earth, no ones figured me out." enzo told her.

"whatever, guess we'll see. if i'm wrong, i'll just be dead." may said before she stepped into the dark corner, taking off her daylight ring.

"oh, you think i'm afraid of your threat? nice try. but no." enzo said with a laugh.

"you're afraid of people leaving. period. you're afraid of being abandoned. the one thing that happens to you again and again. everyone leave, no one stays." may said, looking him in the eyes.

"hmm." enzo said.

"well, that ends now." may told him.

"this is a bit extreme, don't you think?" enzo asked her.

"well, desperate times call for desperate measures as they say. i'm not putting my daylight ring back on until you turn your humanity back on. i'd rather burn alive to save you than abandon you." may told him.

may stepped out into the sunlight and she started to feel the burning. she let out a cry of pain but she didn't stop.

"now, you're just being stupid. you're as good as dead." enzo said before grabbing her ring, pushing her back in the dark corner.

may took the ring from enzo, throwing it out of the house.

"i don't care if i'm dead, enzo. i care about you." may told him.

may grabbed the candle that was beside her in the corner and she put her hand over the flame, letting it burn out.

"if you want to leave, leave." may told him before she vamped outside of the cabin.

she stopped by the door, feeling the skin burning on her body. she kept screaming out in pain and enzo looked at her, not feeling anything.

may let a tear run down her cheek and she looked up at the sky before her arms caught on fire.

just then, may saw enzo's expression change and he vamped over to her, grabbing her and bringing her back inside the dark corner of the cabin.

he held up the ring that she had thrown outside, he grabbed it while he vamped over to her.

"you came back to me." may said in a weak voice as enzo placed her ring back on her finger.

"i'm sorry. i'm so sorry." enzo said, looking into her eyes.

he watched as her skin began to heal and he held her in his arms.

"it's okay, we're okay." may told him.

"i almost lost you." enzo said, placing his hands on her face.

"i'm still here. with you." may said before enzo smiled at her.

"now that i have you back, you're stuck with me forever. because i'm never leaving you." may said before enzo grabbed her face, kissing her deeply with more passion than ever before.
