THEN 2001 NEBRASKA
Jenny sat across from Sam in a coffee shop, staring at him blankly.
"So... You're getting out of this life?" She asked as Sam was quiet for a moment, slowly nodding.
"Yeah. I never liked this life so I think I'm going to go to college soon. Try to have a normal life." Jenny smiled at Sam half-heartedly, leaning back.
"Good. That's really good, Sam. I'm glad you're finding a way out." She said, though she truly felt like yelling at him. She feared that if he got out of this life, he would want to leave everything behind, including her.
Sam flickered a smile, nodding. "Yeah. I was thinking of going here, actually." Sam pulled into a crumbled pamphlet, handing it to Jenny. Her brows rose in surprise.
"Stanford. Wow— But... You were constantly switching schools, Sam." Sam nodded, shrugging a she leaned back.
"Yeah, but I always kept up with my classes. I can't say the same for Dean, but I think I have a good chance of getting in." Jenny slowly set the pamphlet down, humming softly. "What is it?"
"Nothing. Nothing it's just uhm... I've always wanted to go to Stanford. So seeing you trying to get it. It's nice, you know?" Sam frowned, tilting his head.
"Why didn't you go?"
"This life, Sam. It's not as easy for me to leave it. You've wanted to get out of this life since I've known you. But— I'm in this life because I have to be." Jenny took the check from the waitress, scribbling down a nice tip before standing up, Sam following quickly.
"Jenny, you don't have to be in this life. You could come to Stanford with me!" Sam suggested as Jenny slung her bag over her shoulder, scoffing.
"Right. Because they'd totally take a high school drop out who kills monsters for a living." Jenny shook her head. "Thanks for the offer, but I don't want to go back to school."
"You don't have to go back to school!" Sam followed Jenny out of the coffee shop, the door slamming behind him. "We could— we could rent an apartment together! Live normal lives! Don't you want to be free of this weight on your shoulders?"
"No, Sam!" She snapped, spinning around. She took a sharp breath, running a hand over her forehead. "I get it. Honestly, I do. Wanting to take something from your old life and bring it into your new one. But it can't be me, Sam. Because I'll never live the life I want to. The life you'll live. I'll always be a Hunter until I take my last breath."
"Jenny, if you keep living this life, you will die by being a Hunter." Jenny stared at Sam, and nodded.
"And that's a risk I'm always willing to take. Goodbye, Sam."
