Kai woke up the next morning to see another missed call from Yeonjun. "Shit."
He wanted to call him back but figured his best friend was either at an event or out to eat. "I'll try again later, I guess."
Besides the photo issue, he found out last night at dinner, that the Huenings were going to be moving again at the start of the next new year. Yeonjun was set to spend the next 2 years with them in New York so that might be a problem if his parents aren't okay with the new plans.
Kai was just thankful the next place was somewhere warm. He never understood why his mom insisted on going back to the place where they froze their asses off. They were going to be living in the Dominican Republic for at least 1 year with the possibility of Mexico after, until Kai graduated high school.
He was fluent in english, korean, chinese, japanese and now soon, spanish. Learning languages was always exciting to Kai. It kept his brain occupied when school couldnt. His parents never had to worry about their son's grades. Kai was gifted from birth.
Yeonjun and Kai were basically the same people except Yeonjun was almost 3 years older. Both academic geniuses, both knew multiple languages and both carried themselves like royalty wherever they went. Their dreams were to become heads of international affairs in the U.S and travel the world for their jobs. They loved their lives despite how difficult it was to constantly be moving. It made it easier just knowing they were always connected to each other.
To Kai's surprise, Yeonjun actually called him again. "Yeonjunnie!"
"Hi Hyuka! I miss you so much! How's New York city?"
"Crowded. Reminds me of Tokyo. People are just as unfriendly too."
"Well it's not much different here. I cant believe you havent visited me yet. I'll forgive you if you say you finally threw out all those hoodies and sweatpants."
Kai looked over at his closet. They were definitely still there. "Theyre not that bad."
"Kai!"
"Yeonjun come on! We have to wear nice shit all the time. Isnt it refreshing to put on something loose? Arent you tired of button downs and leather shoes?"
"You realize who youre talking to right?"
Kai rolled his eyes.
"Hyuka I can hear you rolling your eyes! When I move in with you, Im cleaning out your closet and we're going shopping on 5th avenue! Ive been waiting 15 years for this so you cant say no."
"Fine! But I should tell you that mom said were moving again next January."
"I know, she called my mom. She said it was okay for us to live together until we graduate."
"Really?!" Kai started jumping up and down in his room. The idea of actually getting to live with Yeonjun for the next couple of years made him really happy.
Yeonjun started jumping too. "Yes, really! We're gonna get so tan in the caribbean! I have to go soon. Anything else you wanted to tell me?"
Kai thought about the missing photo. He didnt want to ruin Yeonjun's good mood. Beomgyu would hopefully ship his stuff soon and if it wasnt in there, then he was going to confess to Yeonjun. "No that was all. Call me later if you can."
"I will! Bye!"
They hung up. Kai remembered to text the address to Beomgyu then went to go change. His dad and him were going to tour his new school.
Taehyun didnt make any friends his first day. People tried talking to him but his anxiety got the best of him. He figured he would try to push through it tomorrow.
Soobin and Beomgyu were waiting outside the school for him. Soobin pulled Tae into a hug and ruffled his hair. Beomgyu told his boyfriend to stop embarassing the kid then asked how his first day went.
Taehyun replied "it was fine. My locker was filled with goodbye messages to this one kid named Kai. Can you believe it? Kai! I got his desk too. It seemed like fate. Small world huh?" Tae rustled through his backpack for the photo. He showed it to the couple. "Which one is Kai? This was left in his old desk."
Beomgyu took the photo and stared longingly at it. Soobin grinned really wide while looking at it over Beomgyu's shoulder. He pointed to the shorter boy and said "that's him. The other one is Yeonjun Choi. Lives the same life as Kai. Moves all the time. Theyre best-"
Beomgyu shot him an Im-going-to-kill-you look which made Soobin change his wording. "Sorry. I MEANT to say theyre very close."
Taehyun asked "how old are they?"
Soobin replied "Yeonjun is our age. Kai is yours. I call him Hyuka because it's more fun to say."
"People must have really loved him. There was 15 letters left in his desk."
Beomgyu's eyes opened remembering what Kai asked. "Can I have them? And the photo? He called me earlier and wanted his stuff shipped. I dont think he cares about the letters but I'll send it anyways."
Taehyun took one last look at the photo before handing it over. His lips made a small smile when he looked at Kai. Beomgyu and Soobin pretended not to notice.
They found their bus and rode it home. Taehyun did his some homework in his lap while the couple were reading through Kai's letters. They kept laughing at all of the love confessions. Beomgyu threatened to not send them out if Kai didnt call him that week. Soobin stupidly said "bet he called Yeonjun" which earned him a playful smack to the arm.
When they arrived back at the cabin, Soobin went to start dinner. Beomgyu took Taehyun out to check the traps. One of them had a half eaten deer in it. Kai, the dragon, probably ate it while they were at school. They tried looking for Sara but she was nowhere to be found.
Baby Kai saw Taehyun and tackled him. Taehyun was getting kisses slobbered all over his face. "I missed you too! I missed you too! I'll fly you tonight. I gotta shower now. Thanks a lot."
The baby dragon hopped off and went to wrestle the rest of the deer in the trap. Beomgyu helped Taehyun to his feet and walked him inside.
Taehyun ran to the shower. He had no idea if dragon slobber cleaned off easily but he hoped so. After all, it was on the nice clothes Soobin kindly bought him.
When he went into the living area, he heard Beomgyu yelling at someone at the phone. The person at the other end was laughing very loudly. His laugh was infectious. Taehyun started giggling and didnt realize it as he went to sit down for dinner.
Soobin got a little tired of his boyfriend yelling so he snatched the phone out of his hand. "Hyuka we still send it to you tonight I promise! Okay bye!" The boy on the other end of the line said "bye!" in the sweetest voice Taehyun has ever heard.
Beomgyu asked Soobin why the hell he hung up and Soobin simply said it was because dinner was ready.
Taehyun asked about Hyuka as they ate dinner together. He learned he was an angel, funny, joked around a lot, exceptionally smart and the purest person they had ever met. Tae could see why he was missed so much throughout the school.
Beomgyu told him "youd love him if you met him. Im telling you, Kai is the best!"
Tae guessed he was right. He asked the couple what they were going to do after they cleaned up dinner. Soobin opted to do homework while Beomgyu said he needed to drop Hyuka's package off at the post office. Taehyun volunteered to go with him. He begged to take the dragons and Beomgyu said yes after a lot of convincing.
They set out at night and only rode on Kai. Sara was busy hunting in a far away lake. What wouldve been a 45 minute drive, turned into a 10 minute flight. The baby was so happy to be flying with his owner, he purposely flew through the biggest clouds he could find. The sudden cold froze his riders in each cloud they passed through. Kai roared his happy roars while he lit his scales. If you were on the ground and you looked up into one of the fat clouds, you could probably see faint flashes of purple in it.
Beomgyu slid off the dragon to stick the thick envelope in the drop box. Then they set to go back home to get ready for school.
