School was three months in for everyone. Taehyun and Hyuka talked every night.
The dragons came less often than usual. Soobin guessed it was because their prey was becoming endangered due to human activity. Beomgyu suggested that couldn't be it because that had been happening for years. It did make them change their diets. Taehyun once found scales from either a crocodile or an alligator in a dragon poo pile. They did seem to be traveling farther to hunt.
Still. This was different. Sara and Kai were gone for three weeks now. Soobin was worried they were killed. He checked the news for dragon sightings or even U.F.O ones but there wasn't anything.
One night, Sara and Kai finally came home. Soobin marched out yelling "WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU GUYS BEEN?! DO YOU UNDERSTAND HOW WORRIED WE'VE BEEN ABOUT YOU?!"
Beomgyu and Taehyun ran out too, just as furious as the oldest.
Sara stood up. Kai then bumped his snoot onto her belly. The guys didn't understand it so Kai tapped his nose onto his mother's belly again.
Beomgyu gasped "OH! Oh... my god. You're pregnant!"
Soobin went up to Sara's belly and listened. Taehyun and Beomgyu followed. They couldn't hear anything but it was still amazing to think about. There would be an egg soon then another little baby dragon.
Taehyun hugged his own dragon next. He missed him a lot. When he pulled away, he asked "I'm not sure how dragon pregnancies work but Kai didn't..."
Beomgyu gagged. Soobin answered "no! Or at least I hope not. A few dragons survived all over the world during the purge. We weren't the only ones to leave." He turned to his dragon and asked "did you find another one?"
Sara enlarged her purple eyes and nodded yes.
Beomgyu asked "are we going to meet him?"
Sara violently shook her head no. She began to roar as if she hated that idea.
Taehyun asked his dragon "he a jerk or something?"
Kai nodded yes. He started stomping around in a circle. His tail almost knocked his owner on his ass but Taehyun jumped over it.
Soobin explained the egg would be born sometime in the winter. It would take a month or so to hatch, dependent on how warm Sara could keep the egg. That meant she probably would find a cave and never leave that spot until the egg was hatched. Kai would be the sole hunter to provide for his mother. Taehyun couldn't wait to see what the sibling would look like. "You'd have a little brother or sister Kai!"
The black dragon flew up into the air and twirled. He let out a deep happy roar. A purple fire ball poofed into the sky. Sara flew up to meet him. They started chasing each other around in a circle. Streaks of fire illuminated the clouds.
Beomgyu was yelling at them to quit it before they got in trouble. Kai landed first. Sara went off, presumably to hunt. The black dragon shortly followed his mother.
Soobin wondered who the baby would choose. "What if it's Yeonjun?"
"I hope not" complained Beomgyu.
Taehyun asked "I thought you guys liked each other now?"
"Sure. I mean we do but he just needs to realize that I'm Hyuka's best friend and he isn't."
Soobin began rubbing his temples. Taehyun laughed at his misery. The older explained "this argument has been going on since I've known them. Your boyfriend told me it's been going on since he met him."
Beomgyu chimed in "it's not my fault Yeonjun got to meet him when he was two. Hyuka just didn't know what he was missing in a best friend until I came along! My picture is bigger than his!"
Soobin stomped inside the house. He was not about to listen to this again. Cooking was therapudic so he started on dinner.
Beomgyu and Taehyun played rock paper scissors over who got to chop the firewood. Soobin yelled from the window, "BOTH OF YOU DO IT SO IT'LL BE DONE FASTER!"
Taehyun grumbled then walked over to the shed. They decided to have a competition once a good tree was selected. When the tree was on the ground, they measured it to find the middle and made a line. Then they took turns chopping at that middle. The tree was now perfectly in half.
First one to finish chopping their half won.
Paul Bunyan had nothing on them. They chopped like maniacs. Soobin watched them struggle in the window while he diced vegetables.
Beomgyu was starting to give out halfway through. He looked over to see Taehyun still going. Maybe challenging him was a bad idea. He had surprisingly large arm muscles.
Admittedly, the younger was getting tired but his ego refused to show it. He kept going until his half was complete. Soobin came out to help Beomgyu once the soup was simmering. Taehyun wanted to help but he was slumped on the ground, trying to catch his breath.
Once all of the wood was chopped, they worked together to put it in the shed. Kai and Sara came back to see their owners struggling with the wood pile. They began to pick up large bundles of logs into their mouths to bring over to the shed. The teenagers just had to put it in. It was a pretty good system.
Kai and Sara got a lot of petting as a thank you. The teenagers then went inside to eat dinner.
Yeonjun called in the middle of it. He was put on speaker.
In the background, there was really loud music. Beomgyu asked "where are you guys?"
The college students both yelled "BEACH PARTY!"
Taehyun asked "beach party?"
Hyuka cheerfully explained "yeah! A bunch of guys invited us. One of them is giving me skateboarding lessons after class! It's a lot of fun Taehyunnie!"
"Right... who is this exactly?"
Yeonjun grabbed the phone. "Calm down. He's just a friend. Plus everyone here knows how old he is."
Hyuka giggled a lot. "I still got a beer though."
Beomgyu asked "are you drunk?"
"No! Junnie am I drunk?"
"Yeah. He's drunk. We need to go. Guys want to set a fire on the beach and Hyuka is insisting on singing Dear Sputnik for them." They hung up after Taehyun told Yeonjun to take care of his boyfriend.
Soobin laughed. "Wow. I never thought I'd hear him drunk."
They finished eating then began doing homework. Taehyun still had no idea what he wanted to be when he grew up. He was good at all subjects but there wasn't any that he particularly loved. A personal trainer didn't sound like the worst job but that didn't pay particularly well. Hyuka would gladly support him but he didn't want to feel like a leech. He also wanted to ensure he could financially survive on his own in the unfortunate event of them breaking up.
A list of possible careers was created. Maybe if he added dietician to his personal trainer idea, he could make more. Have wealthier clients. That was the new goal. He got excited now that he had an actual plan for college. Everything seemed to be coming together.
Before bed, Kai and Taehyun went on a quick night flight. They went to a small lighthouse on lake superior. Kai played in the water while Taehyun stared at the stars. He hadn't heard Dear Sputnik in a while. It felt like the perfect time to play it.
The stars seemed to light up as the song progressed. Taehyun began to hum along and sway his body with the rhythm.
His birthday was coming up. He wanted nothing more than for his boyfriend to be with him at this exact location, sitting under the stars. Hyuka would be next to him playing his guitar. He would sing an acoustic version their song together. Then Taehyun would get nervous as he played with the box in his pocket. He would wait until the song was over then ask the question he's wanted to ask since they first kissed. With luck, Hyuka would say yes.
That dream would have to wait a few years but he knew it would be worth it. For now, as the song came to an end, he pressed replay and listened to it all over again.
