Hyuka woke up in Yeonjun's bed. He didnt remember falling asleep there but he did remember his parents telling him theyre permanently moving to Minnesota when he turns 16.
Yeonjun was already awake, watching a youtube video with his headphones in. He took them off when he saw his best friend wake up. "Hey."
"Hey. So we're really going back to the midwest? That wasnt a horrible dream?"
"Nope. I wish it was. Not exactly going to be happy to be around Beomgyu all the time. How is he always so loud? Doesnt his throat ever hurt from the yelling?"
Hyuka was too depressed to laugh at Yeonjun's attempt at a 'joke'.
The older stroked Hyuka's hair and had to ask the question that was burning in his mind. "I know you hate the cold but arent you excited to see Taehyun? I mean you guys are basically dating."
"Thats the thing. We're not. What if everything goes to shit when we meet Yeonjun? I dont want to lose what we have."
"But what if everything goes well?"
Hyuka scoffed. "Then what? I dont go to Stanford with you? We get seperated again? I throw my whole life away for a possibility?"
"Well... which would you regret more? Taking the chance with Taehyun or not taking it at all? Plus who says Id leave you? I only want to go to Stanford because you want to. Your mom basically made up her mind. But you'll still have me. You'll always have me. We have a blood oath to prove it."
"Im glad I have you Yeonjun."
"Me too."
The two laid in bed and continued to watch youtube videos together. Hyuka tried to pay attention but his mind drifted to a version of his life without Taehyun and one with.
The one without looked like success. He would go to Stanford with Yeonjun. Excel in all of his classes. Surf the waves, and bask in the California heat. They would see all of their favorite singers in concert because they could since they all stop in that state.
When they graduated college, they would start their journey to rule the world. Travel for a living in international affairs. They would be the best man at each other's weddings and buy houses next to one another. It was planned, unpredictable and perfect.
The version with didnt look like anything. All he saw was Taehyun. It was like he was a light shining so brightly, he blocked the view of Hyuka's future. What was behind the warmth? Even more warmth? True happiness? A vow to never be apart again?
Or was it pain? The pain of losing the perfect image he had of Taehyun in his head to reality. The pain that came with settling, knowing you couldve chosen something with the potential to be greater but you settled. The pain of knowing you lost the love of your life and it wasnt even worth it. Taehyun tried pushing him away once. What it he did it in person? Would it even be worth it to fight for him?
Hyuka remembered the letter Taehyun sent to him, telling him he would wait for him. He remembered the song he wrote the older for his birthday and how he really did mean every word.
Yeonjun's question rung in his mind. "Which would you regret more?" He knew.
Beomgyu was pacing back and forth, waiting for the mail to arrive. Soobin told him to stop but got ignored.
Taehyun was too busy studying to care. He loved the idea of going to college at the same time as Hyuka. The school let him do a couple of online classes in between his regular ones. They admired his ambition and he single handedly brought up his class's GPA.
Soobin said "Beomgyu would you quit it? Your birthday isnt for another 4 days. The mail will come when the mail will come!"
Beomgyu whined "but Taehyun got a love song and his present arrived 3 days early!"
