"Mom are you serious?"
Yeonjun and Hyuka were protesting the idea of going to Thanksgiving with the rest of the Huening family. They werent going to win the argument but they were going to make their complaints heard.
The reason the boys hated Thanksgiving was because Hyuka's dad's side of the family didnt exactly like his mom's side. They hated how much they moved. Grandma Huening accused Hyuka's mom of 'keeping her son away from her' and compared their life to a traveling prison.
Hyuka would of course defend his mom which would rope Yeonjun into the argument defending his best friend. Mr. Huening would be trying, and failing, to keep the peace and there was always at least one person crying by the end of it.
The boys didnt give a shit about football or the Macy's parade but it was their relief from the yelling. The family managed to get out of the reunion for the last 6 years but this year Mrs. Huening insisted on going. Her mother in law kept bitching about it so she finally gave in.
What made it worse was Hyuka didnt have any cousins around his age. He had a lot of them but they were all either adults or in elementary school. Yeonjun was literally the only person he could have a normal conversation with.
The boys made a game plan this year. First, they would be glued to the TV until they got bored of the parade. Their 'hiding' place would be the hot tub in the backyard until the elementary school cousins decided to play the wave game again. Then, it would be back to the TV to pretend to watch football. Dinner would consist of shoving food and drinks into their mouths so they didnt have to talk. To finish off the night, they would find a way to climb onto the roof until they got yelled at to get off. By that point it would be time to go home to end the nightmare.
Mrs. Huening threatened "we leave tomorrow. Pack. Now."
The boys groaned as they started packing for their day trip. They took bets on who was going to cry this time. Every year it was Grandma Huening but Yeonjun had a feeling it would be Grandpa Huening this time.
8:30am flight to go to Washington, D.C. Hyuka did his best to fake being sick, with Yeonjun backing him up, but his dad carried him to the car and told him to suck it up.
They landed a little after 10am and went to pick up the rental car. The drive to Arlington, Virginia was short but Mr. Huening opted for the more scenic drive to make it longer.
The family walked up to the front door and knocked. Yeonjun and Hyuka shared a look then the door opened.
Grandma Huening pulled her son into a tight hug then made her usual back handed compliment to Hyuka's mom. His dad told her to knock it off but she felt like she didnt do anything wrong. Grandpa Huening hugged the boys and whispered apologizes to his daughter in law. He didnt have the energy to fight with his wife anymore. That died a long time ago.
Hyuka dashed to the flat screen with Yeonjun following closely behind. They turned the parade on and watched the giant balloons float across the TV. One by one, other branches of the Huening family tree poured into the house. By 12pm, it was packed.
The elementary school kids played soccer and frisbee in the backyard while the adults drank and huddled around the TV with the boys. They made polite talk about their adventures and what everyone had been up to before being glued to their phones.
While watching one of the football games play, they finally heard the yelling. Hyuka rolled his eyes and got up to go defend his mom. Yeonjun sighed and followed after.
More yelling ensued as Hyuka heard his grandma call his mom a "failure" for only producing one child. He knew how hard it was for them to even have him. His mom almost died trying to give birth to him. Now his dad was yelling at his mom which only made it worse. Yeonjun bragged about Hyuka's accomplishments and told her she achieved nothing in her sad life. Very predictably, Grandma Huening started crying and dinner hasnt even been served yet.
