Volleyball game

Hyuka came up to Yuna before the game and wished her good luck. He felt bad for always ignoring her. Its not like she did anything to deserve it.

She gave him an unexpected hug then said "thank you!"

Jake was mad while Vernon and Seungmin kept laughing at him. Hyuka went to the bleachers to sit with his friends. The game started and they begun cheering the girls on.

Beomgyu met up with Taehyun after school ended and walked with him to the bus stop. Tae asked where Soobin was and he said he had to stay back to finish a big project. Sara was going to pick him up later after everyone left the school.

They took a seat on the back of the bus and Beomgyu asked if Taehyun had ever been to New York.

"No. Ive never left the midwest actually. Why?"

"Hyuka's birthday is in August and I think it's time you too met. What do you think?"

"You really dont have to do this."

"I know. But I miss my best friend and youre a big part of my life now. I think it's only fair you guys meet. Especially if we may not get the chance again."

The thought of going on his first big vacation ever was exciting to him. Meeting Hyuka was just the cherry on top. Beomgyu said they were going to fly at midnight and get there around 4 in the morning. They picked a cheap motel by the ocean so the dragons would always be near. He explained Hyuka had no idea about their plan yet so yet didn't have a time line of how long they were going to stay.

Beomgyu tried calling but Hyuka didn't pick up. They were going to try again after dinner and hope for the best.

Kai saw Beomgyu calling him again. The ringing made Yuna look over in his direction and they lost a point. Kai mouthed "sorry" as he put his phone on silent.

Vernon asked if that was Wonyoung and he said it was just a friend from Minnesota.

Yuna scored again and the boys cheered. Her movements were quick and fluid. She looked like a dancer on the gym floor with the volleyball being her prop.

The girls proved why they were the best in the state. They won by a landslide. Yuna ran up to Kai and gave him another hug. He told her she did a great job and congratulated her on their win. Her cheeks tinted pink as she said "thank you". She then asked if he wanted to get some ice cream after and recieved a yes.

Yuna left to go change so Hyuka hung around the gym with his friends. Jake told him to make an excuse to leave so he could go instead. Kai laughed hoping it was a joke. He found himself actually wanting to go as an apology for acting like an ass to her earlier. "We're just going as friends Jake."

"And youre going to the dance as friends too right? And she knows you have a girlfriend?"

Hyuka was annoyed. Jealousy was something he didnt care to make time for in his last few months in New York. He told Jake to get over it or they wouldnt hang out anymore.

Jake swallowed his pride and said he was sorry. They got close in the past few months. This wasnt how he wanted to end things.

Yuna came out of the locker room in a white t-shirt and black sweatpants. Hyuka nudged Jake for a second then said "Jake was just telling me how amazing you played out there."

She looked between the two and replied "thank you. I practice a lot."

He got shy. "It pays off. Im sure youll get a scholarship to whichever university you apply to."

"I hope so! I want to go to Brown. My family went there, it's my turn soon."

"No way! Thats one of the schools I want to apply to!"

Hyuka watched Yuna keep the conversation going out of politeness. It got a little awkward after but he was proud of Jake for actually speaking to her. He saw Beomgyu calling him again so he dismissed himself from the gym, into the hallway.

"Thank god you saved me from such an awkward situation. Whats up?"

Beomgyu put him on speaker so Taehyun could hear him. "Do you have any plans for your birthday?"

"I think Yeonjun has something planned but I dont know what. Why?"

"I was planning on visiting you. I would surprise you but I knew you wouldnt have time for me if I did. Did I ask in time?"

Hyuka started laughing. Taehyun smiled at his laugh. It warmed his soul. "Call Yeonjun and see if he has plans for us. He tends to buy things months in advance. I would love to hang out with you if he doesnt!"

"HOLD ON. Hyuka do NOT get busy in the next 5 minutes okay? Im going to call him right now then I'll call you back!"

"Actually I was just about to-"

Beomgyu hung up. Hyuka was wondering how much longer he could stall ice cream. That phone call better be quick.

Beomgyu called Yeonjun and put him on speaker.

Yeonjun very sleepily replied "hello...? Ugh what now? I get it. Your picture is big. Congratulations."

"No its not that! Dont make plans for Kai's birthday because Im going to visit. Okay? Thank you!" Before he could hang up on him, Yeonjun said he already did. He bought them tickets to niagra falls on the canadian side. They were going to spend the whole week in Toronto with the falls as a day trip.

Beomgyu whined "you get to see him all the time! You cant let me have him for a week?!"

"How the hell are you my age? Seriously how? Like it or not he considers me as HIS best friend and you know it! I dont have anything planned the week after so that would be your last chance before school starts for us. Got it? You get the 3rd week in August. If you cant go then thats too fucking bad Choi!" Yeonjun hung up after.

Taehyun asked why they couldnt just go to Canada with them and Beomgyu replied it would ruined Hyuka's trip. They would spend the whole time arguing with Yeonjun and he couldnt do that to Kai.

Taehyun sincerely asked "have you thought about just being nice to him? He doesnt seem that bad."

"Oh you too huh?"

"Beomgyu stop."

"Sorry. Its just whenever Hyuka did live in Minnesota, Yeonjun still managed to spend more time with him than me. The guy hates me and I hate him too."

"You both are putting your best friend in the middle and I feel sorry for him! And you might want to try calling him back. It's been more than 5 minutes."

"FUCK!" Beomgyu tried calling but did not recieve an answer.

Yuna walked out of the gym and linked her arm around Kais'. He couldnt wait any longer. They left together and walked towards Mcdonalds. Yuna paid for 2 oreo Mcflurries while Kai bought 2 large fries.

They began talking about school and their game plan for the spring dance. Yuna determined they needed to match. She was going to wear a royal blue dress and Kai needed to have royal blue accessories to complete their look. Hyuka just agreed with everything she was saying. He couldnt care less about what suit he had to wear this time. What mattered was it meant he could get to go to the tailors again.

When they finished their meal, he waited with her until her parents picked her up. Hyuka called his band mates and asked if they wanted to do karaoke at the chinese restaurant tonight. They said yes and met up with their instruments. If his relationship didnt work out, singing with his friends at random venues was the one thing about New York he was going to miss.

Taehyun realized this was another phone call where he didnt say a word to Hyuka. He wanted to but Beomgyu somehow always did the talking for him. Before he went to bed, he promised himself that next time he was going to at least say hello. The boy in the photo just couldnt get out of his head.
