Taehyun cleaned Kai's new cabin a million times. Today was not only his boyfriend's birthday, it marked the last time they had to be long distance.
Every little spec of dust got cleaned. All of the glass was wiped until it sparkled. That two story cabin smelled of cleaning chemicals. He opened some of the windows to air it out. It all looked perfect. He stared at the pillows on the couch. They didn't look like the correct angle. He fluffed them for two minutes before realizing they didn't matter.
Beomgyu came in to check on him. He watched his little brother polish the flat screen Yeonjun's parents installed. "You know, I don't think Kai cares about how shiny the screen looks as much as you do."
Taehyun didn't bother to turn around. "It has to be perfect! It's his birthday!"
"He's not even staying here tonight. He promised to stay in our house! Remember?"
"THAT'S RIGHT!" Taehyun ran to shut all the windows. He then grabbed his bucket of cleaning products and ran to his cabin.
Beomgyu chased after him. He had a cleaning process for a reason. The younger was about to mess with it. He yelled "THE CABIN IS CLEAN! TRUST ME ON THAT! THERE'S A REASON I DON'T LET YOU HELP ME TAEHYUN!"
The younger absolutely did not care. He kept running until he reached his home. First thing he started on was the outside of the windows. All of those had to be polished.
Soobin was dicing some onions when he looked up to see Taehyun spraying blue chemicals on the window. He saw his fiancé in the distance running after him. That was not an argument he wanted to be part of. He cranked the music on his phone louder then continued to dice away.
Beomgyu caught up with the younger by the time he was done cleaning three windows. He grabbed the bucket of chemicals and said "are you crazy?! Hyuka isn't going to care about this!" Taehyun kept panic cleaning. The older harshly grabbed his wrist then softly said "calm down. What are you so worried about? This is Hyuka we're talking about! He'll be so happy to see you that he won't care about anything else. Trust me!"
Taehyun nodded. He handed the rag and the blue spray over. Beomgyu was right. He went inside to tidy his room for the millionth time. The gifts went onto the bed. He couldn't wait to see his boyfriend's face after he opened it. After he straightened his bed out, he decided to lie down. No messages from Hyuka or Yeonjun. They were probably on their way to the airport.
A tall blonde man and an asian woman knocked on the door. Soobin ran up to hug them. "Mr. Huening! Mrs. Huening! What brings you here?! I thought you guys weren't coming until dinner tonight!"
Beomgyu ran out to hug them too. Hyuka's mom laughed. "We wanted to get a headstart on packing before the boys got here. If we didn't start now, it would never get done!"
Taehyun walked out of his room and realized his boyfriend's parents were in the living room. He straightened himself out and took a deep breath. This first impression had to go well.
Hyuka's dad looked over to see the one person he didn't recognize. He smiled widely. "You must be Taehyun! The boyfriend right?"
"Yes sir... it's nice to meet you. Is um... is Kai here?"
Mr. Huening ran up to hug him. He skipped the handshake entirely. When he pulled off, he lightly smacked his shoulder. "No. They're at the airport right now. We just came over to say hi to you guys. My wife and I are going to start unpacking their stuff in the cabin."
Taehyun saw the similarities between his boyfriend and his dad. It was uncanny. "Do you want some help?"
That won over Mrs. Huening. "That would be lovely but you really don't have to."
"It's okay! I don't have anything better to do. I don't mind!"
Taehyun walked back with them. He was shy as hell. Mr. Huening did all of the talking for him. He told the kid how much happier his son seemed to be after they started dating. Mrs. Huening asked questions about his future plans and his acedemics. She was pleased to hear he graduated early. Taehyun reinforced Hyuka as his sole motivation for it.
A low growl was heard in the distance. That was Kai, probably nipping at Stella. Another growl was heard. The two siblings were arguing about something. The Huenings looked around for the source of the sound.
Taehyun quickly lead them to the house. "We've had bear issues lately. It's probably best if we get inside!"
Once they were in the house, Mr. Huening asked if they needed a gun. Taehyun insisted Beomgyu was taking care of it. They had traps around the woods. That seemed like a good enough answer for the Huenings. The two men brought boxes in from the truck while Hyuka's mom worked to unpack them. Taehyun was surprised at how little there was. "They don't hold onto much do they?"
Mr. Huening chuckled. "Not really. When you move as much as we did, you learn to only hold onto the stuff you can't buy again."
Mrs. Huening grabbed a picture frame and handed it to Taehyun. "Here. I think you'll want to see this."
The frame consisted of 10 selfies they took together. The middle picture was of them kissing on the balcony of the lighthouse. He briefly hugged it then handed the frame back. "When did he make this?"
"No idea. I haven't seem them since they went to college. If I had to guess, it might've been after he went to see you last time." She briefly looked around the cabin. "I still can't believe Yeonjun bought this place."
"Was his parents mad?"
She started laughing. "Oh god yes. Their child spent half a million without consulting them. I had a lengthy talk with Kai after I heard about that! And even longer one when I found out about the engagement rings for Beomgyu and Soobin!"
Mr. Huening walked in with the last box. "We love you kids but at least wait until you're 21 and have careers okay?"
Taehyun swallowed then weakly said "yes sir." He didn't really want to wait that long. Hyuka turned 16 today. 21 was a whole 5 years away. That was too long. Maybe he could get lucky and have his boyfriend propose first. It didn't matter right now. He continued to help unpack everything. All of Yeonjun's boxes went into his room upstairs. Hyuka's boxes were transported to the opposite end of the hall. He was sweating by the time the boxes were sorted into their rooms.
Mr. Huening yelled from downstairs, "hey Taehyun! Do you still want that dinner later? How about tomorrow night?"
Taehyun peaked over the edge. "Yes! That sounds perfect!" It was not. He realized he had work. "Wait! Sorry... how about two days from now? I have work tomorrow!"
"Sounds like a plan! I'll see you kids then! I'm going to go pick them up from the airport. Have fun tonight! Wear protection!"
Taehyun's face flushed red as he watched the Huenings leave. Hyuka really was a carbon copy of his dad. He went back into the bedroom to look for a spot to hang the picture. He chose the area above the TV. The frame was fairly large. A nail got pounded into the wall then the frame was hung up. Taehyun took a second to admire his handiwork. Music kept him occupied while he continued to unpack everything else.
When he was done, all of the cardboard was gathered and squished down. He carried the large pile to the storage closet. They were perfect fire starters. Since there was so much cardboard, he struggled to shove it all in. His frustration blocked out the sound of footsteps behind him. He jumped when he felt someone hug him from behind. That familiar honey voice said "hi baby!"
Taehyun turned around to see his favorite person in the world. He leaped into a kiss. His arms were wrapped tightly around Hyuka's neck as his waist was pulled closer in. When he pulled away, he had the biggest grin on his face. "Happy birthday!" He took Hyuka's hands and started jumping up and down. "Want to see your present?! Want to? Want to?!"
Hyuka laughed then kissed his cheek. "You didn't have to get my anything! You are my present!"
Taehyun quickly kissed his lips. He was so happy. He grabbed Hyuka's hand then began to run into the cabin. It was finally time to celebrate.
