Chasing the herd

"Oh my god Kai SLOW DOWN!" Taehyun yelled as he rode the stars on his dragon. The baby was having a little too much fun at Tae's expense. He kept flipping and doing loops like a rollercoaster. The baby's favorite thing to do though, was dive downwards at a 45 degree angle like a meteor crashing to earth. Taehyun passed out the first several times due to the g-force on his body. It took him a solid 2 months to get used to it.

His fear of heights was at least gone now. Everything looked so much more beautiful from above. All of the problems on the ground seemed miniscule when you were that high in the sky.

Kai flew Taehyun to a favorite place of theirs, not before whipping through a fat snow cloud. The baby roared as Taehyun's clothes got soaked.

They landed in a snow covered prairie in North Dakota. Taehyun put his hands on his hips and told Kai to apologize. The dragon licked his face then started bouncing up and down. It was impossible to stay mad when he was going to act like that. The big purple eyes certainly didnt help.

Taehyun walked forward with Kai trailing behind. They were trying to find the herd of bison that was there last night. It started to snow again which made it much harder to see. Kai saw Taehyun shivering so he blew smoke rings in his direction. The warmth felt great against Tae's back. The smell however, was very unpleasant.

Kai stopped when he smelled something. He let out a loud roar which scared the crap out of Taehyun. "What is it boy? Do you smell them? Are they close?"

The baby dragon took a couple steps forward then perked his ears. He started walking even faster, sniffing every couple of feet.

Snow started falling at an accelerated rate. There was about an inch added to the ground. The wind started whistling through the flat land, smacking Taehyun in the face. He couldnt feel his ears or nose. Snowflakes begun to stick to his eyelashes.

Kai turned around to see the poor boy struggling. He picked his rider up and threw him on his back then continued following the herd's scent. The dragon's tail waved back and forth in excitment. They were getting close.

Taehyun saw them in the distance. Big fluffly brown rocks that were covered in a white blanket that was getting thicker by the hour. His heart rate increased as his adrenaline grew. The chase was about to start.

Kai had been practicing hunting while the boys were at school. He could only catch small animals so far but was working himself up to the bigger ones. Baby bison were the size of himself so he considered it good practice. Sara sometimes tagged along and caught some of the adults so she could share with her baby. Taehyun was traumatized watching something so big and fluffy be turned into bbq in an instant. He knew it was the cycle of life but seeing it play out was something else. Sara sensed his mood change so she stopped joining since.

Taehyun tightened the footholds of the saddle and grabbed onto the purple scales tightly. Kai looked at in anticipation. Taehyun nodded and off they went.

The herd saw the giant purple and black bullet coming towards their direction and started to run. They bellowed in fear but Kai roared louder. His black wings spread as his purple begun to glow. He began gliding over some of the slower bison, circling them like a hawk.

Taehyun starting cheering into the wind. He felt invincible. The prince of life and death. Taehyun shouted "Ahi! Ahi! Fire! Fire!" Kai drew a line of fire, splitting the slower members of the herd from the stronger ones. The ones behind the line tried running around it but Kai was too fast. He began drawing a square to box them in.

Fire met ice as the border vaporized from the cold. It was enough to stun the victims inside as Kai landed on the ground. The purple eyes glowed, locking his prey (a baby bison) into place. He slowly walked towards it. Taehyun could see the fear in it's eyes.

Wind whipped the snow off of the small bison's back. Kai opened his mouth to reveal a large set of sharp baby dragon teeth. His jaw clamped upon the bison's back as it tried to run.

Taehyun started laughing on Kai's back as he pulled off of the poor thing. The baby dragon started spitting all of the hair off of his tounge. He kept roaring his high pitched whiny roar in between hacking more hair out of his mouth. His prey ran away as Kai still struggled.

When Taehyun finally stopped laughing, he said "yeah bison have thick fur and skin. There's a reason your mom doesnt come out here a lot!"

The dragon whipped his head around to glare at his owner. He gathered a small ball of spit into his mouth and shot it at Taehyun. Tae dodged out of the way then started hugging his giant baby. "Dont get mad at me! You caught it! Thats the first time right? Im so proud of you!"

Kai's expression relaxed and he started joyfully hopping. Taehyun told him it was time to go home and off they flew.

When they landed back into their section of the woods, Sara was ready with a dead doe for her baby.

Taehyun slid off and went inside the cabin. Beomgyu and Soobin were cuddling on the couch watching Friends. Soobin turned his head and asked "he catch anything this time?"

"Yeah! He let it go though. Too much hair got in his mouth. Not enough flesh. It was so funny!"

The couple grinned at the thought. Soobin asked if he had any homework left and Tae replied he did. He went to his bedroom and started to do it.

A text appeared on his phone from a girl in his class. She asked him if he wanted to go skating together sometime. Taehyun had never had anyone interested in him before. He should be happy but something just didnt feel right about it. There was nothing wrong with her either. She just... didnt do it for him.

He said yes regardless. Someone actually wanted to hang out with him. Someone his age and they werent going to study either. "Maybe itll be fun" he told himself.

Taehyun walked back into the living area to see the couple kissing. They looked really cute. He thought about Kai for the first time in over a month. Seeing his photo brought an unfamiliar warmth to him. Suddenly, he wished he was going skating with the boy in the photo.
