Jai Mei arrived back in her village feeling proud of what she had accomplished in Wei Xiaoli's home.
However, her satisfaction was short-lived as she found her husbands lying in bed, ill with the influenza.
Jai Mei rushed to her husband's side, feeling a sense of panic rise in her chest.
"Guys can you hear me?" Jai Mei asked softly as she sat down next to them. They groaned in response, and Jai Mei's heart sank.
She placed a hand on Hao Zhang forehead and felt the heat radiating from his skin.
"I need to get them cooled down," she thought to herself. She quickly went to the kitchen and grabbed some wet cloths, wringing it out before placing it on their foreheads.
She then mixed together some herbs and made them a cup of hot tea and soups.
Jai Mei sat by her husband's side, watching them closely. She couldn't help but feel guilty for not noticing their symptoms earlier when she frequent home in the last 2 weeks.
"I was so focused on helping others, and being at the doctors place I didn't even notice that my own husbands was sick," she scolded herself.
But she pushed those thoughts aside and focused on taking care of her husbands.
She was determined to do everything in her power to help them recover.
Jai Mei took a deep breath as she stepped outside of her house, basket in hand, to gather some fresh vegetables and eggs for her soups. As she walked towards her vegetable garden, she couldn't help but notice that her animals weren't feeling or looking well.
Her chickens were looking sickly and not moving as much as usual. She quickly checked on her rabbits and found that they, too, were unwell.
Jai Mei's heart sank as she realized that the influenza had not only affected her family, but it had also spread throughout the village, affecting the animals as well. She looked around and saw other villagers tending to their sick animals too..
She knew that if something wasn't done quickly, the animals and villagers would suffer and it would be a disaster for the village.
Feeling a sense of urgency and dread, Jai Mei gathered as many vegetables and all the eggs and hurried back to her home.
As she walked back to her house, carrying her basket, she could feel her animals following closely behind her.
Xiao Hei, her loyal dog, and her puppies had been following her since she left the house.
They seemed to sense that something was wrong. She quickly cleaned the produce, boiled water for soup, and began making a nourishing broth.
As she tenderly tended to her husband's wounds, she couldn't help but notice the faded scars on their bodies, a reminder of the abuse she had inflicted upon them in the past.
Her heart sank as memories of their turbulent history flooded her mind.
Despite their current illness with influenza, she did her best to care for them, administering herbal medicine, preparing nourishing broth, and meticulously wiping them down and changing their clothes.
She sought to make them as comfortable as possible. With her faithful companion Xiao Hei and her puppies following closely behind, she embarked on a journey to Doctor Liang Bo's house, knowing she had to act swiftly to prevent the further spread of the influenza that affected all four of them.
As Jai Mei arrived at Doctor Liang Bo's home, she saw that it was already crowded with patients suffering from the influenza.
Doctor Liang Bo noticed her and immediately turned to her saying, "I've sent word for other doctors to come as soon as possible.
We need to prevent this influenza from spreading throughout the village or worse country. They should be here within two hours."
Jai Mei looked at Doctor Liang Bo with relief in her eyes. "That's wonderful news," she said. "I was worried about how we were going to handle this all on our own."
Doctor Liang Bo nodded. "We can't afford to take any chances," he said. "This influenza has already made too many sick. We need all the help we can get."
Jai Mei nodded in agreement, grateful for Doctor Liang Bo's foresight in calling for additional help. Together, they continued tending to the sick patients, hoping that the other doctors would arrive soon.
Jai Mei worked alongside Doctor Liang Bo, tending to the sick patients in his home. She administered herbal remedies and soups, wiping their foreheads with a cool cloth and providing words of comfort.
As they took breaks to freshen up and eat, Jai Mei noticed the other doctors arriving.
Doctor Liang Bo explained the situation and their plan of action. The other doctors nodded in agreement and immediately got to work.
Jai Mei offered her assistance and began to make house calls to those who were sick, bringing them herbal remedies and soups to help them recover. She also visited the sick animals, administering the remedies and feeding them as best she could.
Over the next couple of days, Jai Mei was exhausted between taking care of her husbands and helping the villagers, but her and the other doctors worked tirelessly to tend to the sick and dying.
They were all dressed in protective medical gear and masks that covered their faces and hair, making it difficult to distinguish one person from another.
But Jai Mei couldn't help but feel disheartened as she noticed the state of the crops and gardens. Many of the plants were withering away, and the animals were getting weaker from the lack of food.
She knew that the village relied heavily on their crops and animals for survival, and if they didn't act fast, the situation could become dire.
Doctor Liang Bo and the other doctors huddled together, discussing the dire situation at hand.
One doctor voiced his concern, "We don't have enough manpower to turn this situation around quickly. I'm afraid we will have to approach the village chief and petition the government to send more doctors."
Another doctor interjected, "But the villagers will be burdened with the cost of such services. They are already struggling to produce enough goods given the current state of their health and crops."
Doctor Liang Bo sighed heavily, "I understand the difficulties, but we have to do something. Let's focus on finding a solution for now and worry about the bigger problems later."
Jai Mei watched as the doctors conferred with each other, discussing what steps to take next.
She knew that time was of the essence, so she stepped forward to offer her solution.
"Excuse me, Doctor Liang Bo," she said, "I have an idea that could help save the crops and animals."
Doctor Liang Bo turned to her, intrigued. "Please, do tell," he said.
Jai Mei hesitated for a moment, but she knew that her idea could make a real difference.
"Well, I think we should organize a group of volunteers of villagers that are in good health to tend to the gardens and fields," she began.
"We can instruct those villagers on proper hygiene and sanitizing techniques to prevent the spread of the influenza. And how to nurse them back the animals and crops to health with better care and nutrition.
We can avoid burdening the village with the need to seek government assistance and provide the necessary aid ourselves.
Doctor Liang Bo and the other doctors nodded thoughtfully. "That's an excellent plan," he said. "Let's get to work on it right away."
