"That's alot of food for just you."
Deon jumped nearly out of his skin, "For fuck sake Ratok, I thought you were asleep."
Ratok chuckled and moved in closer. He reached passed Deon and punched in some food for himself with what Deon was ordering. "I tried, couldn't settle. What are you doing here?"
"It's not for me," Deon said waiting for the Giant to move. "It's for Kaylo and Tyklyn."
Ratok raised a brow, "Why for?"
"They haven't been fed. They look small, like they are being starved."
Ratok just nodded his head. "I see. Need help taking this to them?"
Deon nodded.
They were fairly quite until the food came. Then they walked out together.
"Did you just see them?" Ratok asked.
"Yes."
Ratok left the question there.
Deon kept glancing over to him. Until they reached the laboratory. "When we drop these off, will you come with me to see her?"
Ratok nodded, "Of course."
Kaylo and Tyklyn lit up like fires when they saw Ratok and Deon walk down into the dungeon, with trays full of food and drunks. Ratok sat the tray he had down, and popped open the cell door. He set the tray in, then let Deon do the same. Neither boy moved until Ratok and Deon was back on the other side with the door locked again.
Kaylo rushed over and grabbed on of the drinks and started to gulp it down.
Tyklyn was a bit more hesitant on his actions but moved up and grabbed some food. Deon and Ratok stayed long enough to make sure they both were able to start then headed back.
This time Deon walked past the front door and down the right hallway, following the long corridor down to a large sitting room. He had spent some time in this room with Ratok those first couple weeks after the attack happened.
"You ready to see her?" Ratok placed his hand down on the nob, looking back at Deon.
Deon continued to stare at the door. He remembered the first time seeing her floating in that vat, the bright blue around her, the sound of the vitals beeping. She was alive, but she wasn't living in that. For over a year Vassenhilo just told them to wait she'd be out.
Deon nodded at Ratok.
Ratok slowly turned the nob, as the door cracked open. Deon turned and ran out of the building.
Ratok slammed the door shut and hauled after him. "Deon!" The two raced across the compound, down towards the walls, Deon was down at the wall first. He looked around panicking as he did, then sprinted off in the next direction. He scanned the wall as he rushed past until he found the door Ratok had shown him a few months back.
Deon's speed was his biggest aid to him, as he was able to type out the code to the outside and jut out. Before Ratok even made it to the wall.
"Fucking hell Deon!" Ratok raved, as he had to retype in the code and follow him out, "you know I'm gonna have a hell of a time explaining why my code was used twice on this door," he hollered.
Deon didn't listen he was just in bolt action.
His feet patted against the dirt path. Trees that towered higher than buildings were surrounding him, he jumped over bushes and large fallen branches, and lunged under low hanging vines.
Until his stamina went out.
When he finished he stood at the edge of a large cliff, his breath was heavy and hurt, his chest rising and falling as quickly as it physically could, he bent over holding his hands on his knees, looking down over the River that rushed below.
Ratok finally caught up to him, not as out of breath, but he was far more use to physical activity. Ratok slowly walked up to Deon. Careful not to startle him with how close he stood to the edge.
"Deon, come back here." He waited and watched for any movements that show he was going to go towards the River and not away from the edge.
Deon straightened up, from all of his panting he couldn't tell he was crying. Until he turned around and felt the sting of tears against his face. Ratok took one good look at him, and felt bad.
The big man waved the smaller one over, "Came here."
Deon was slow to move slowly making baby steps toward Ratok, and when he got there Ratok did the only thing he knew to do for someone crying, and wrapped him into a large bear hug,
Deon was quick to wrap his arms around Ratok, being dwarfed by the massive arms, he was engulfed into the embrace. Deon took a deep breath, but it came out in sobs. While this wasn't the person he wanted to have hold him right now, Ratok did make a fairly good replacement.
When Deon was finished he pushed away from Ratok wiping his eyes and nose dry. "Uhm. Thanks." Was all he could muster, "Can we head back, I'm thinking I want a nap."
Ratok nodded, "Yeah I need sleep before tonight."
Ratok pulled Deon away from the cliff and pushed him back up towards the wall. Both exhausted. And it wasn't even midday yet.
