~Brie
The doorbell rang and I straightened my dress and hurried to get the door with a smile.
“Surprise!” Dove exclaimed, then burst into giggles. “Sorry, I thought it was Manny.”
I smiled. Zachary barely glanced at me from behind his fiancée.
“Please come in,” I said.
They walked in and I shut the door.
“Where's the birthday boy?” Dove asked, setting her present on the gift table I'd set up.
“Out in the backyard with his friends. I hired entertainers.”
“Oh, you can afford that?” Zachary let out, then scoffed, “Of course you can. Heiress in the making.”
“Zachary stop it” Dove scolded him.
“I'm going to go get a drink” he frowned and walked away.
Dove sighed.
“I'm sorry, Brie.”
I smiled and shook my head.
“It's okay. Help yourself to the adult drinks at the bar.”
She nodded and hurried after Zach. I filled my cheeks with air and the doorbell rang again.
“I hope we're the right amount of fashionably late!”
I cracked a small smile.
“Hi Mom” I greeted.
She moved over to hug me.
“Where's my handsome grandson?”
“Backyard” I replied. “Hi Daddy” I hugged him.
He nodded and kissed my cheek.
“I'll go look for him,” he said, walking toward the backyard.
I waited for the rest to come up the front stairs and into the house.
“Auntie Brie!” Emmett's kids screamed and ran up to hug me.
“Hi, sweethearts!” I grinned.
“We each brought a present for Manny!” Mariah chirped.
“Oh you're such good cousins” I smiled. “You can put it on the table along with all the other presents and go tackle him in the backyard.”
They nodded and each put their presents on the table before rushing into the backyard screaming. I smiled after them. Someone cleared their throat and I turned. My brother and his wife were standing there. Emmett wasn't even looking at me, and Nia? She was scowling at me.
“Hey. Come on in, please.”
Nia rolled her eyes as she bounced one baby in her arms.
“I'm not here for you, I'm here for Roman,” she said curtly. “So if you'll excuse me.”
She sidestepped me and walked away.
“Emmett—”
“Please don't, my daughter's sleeping” he cut me off, gesturing to the very much awake baby in his arms.
I sighed and moved closed the door only for a hand to stick through the door.
“Jesus, Leslie! I could have hurt you!” I scolded.
“But you didn't” he grinned. “And hold the door for Rissa and your ex-boss. They're not far behind.”
He slid past me and I smiled as Iris approached... but without Aiden.
