“So, how was school today?” I asked Roman as I took a bite out of my hotdog.

“Fine,” he said, scratching Dash behind his ears.

I smiled.

Do I tell him?

“Mommy? Are you okay?”

I blinked.

“What?” I asked.

“Are you okay?” he repeated, shielding his beautiful eyes from the setting sun.

“Yes baby, w-why would you ask that?”

“You fed all your ice cream to Dashy” he giggled.

I laughed.

“Well, I felt like my friend here needed it more than I did,” I said, joining him to scratch Dash behind his ears.

I watched my son smile at Dash whose light had returned into his eyes.

“So what did you do at school today? Did Miss Annie give you any homework?”

“No.”

“So what'd you do?”

“Learn about dragons.”

I narrowed my eyes.

“Dragons?” I asked. “Your class learned about dragons?”

“No. I learned about dragons. I don't know what everybody else was doing.”

I ruffled his hair.

“Manny, my goodness” I laughed.

“Can we please go now, mommy? I'm cold”

“Mm hm,” I hummed in response as I swallowed my food. “C'mon.”

He let go of Dash and took to his feet.

“Walk! The both of you!” I scolded.

I unlocked the door and they climbed in the back.

“Seat belts” I instructed as I got behind the wheel.

“Does Dash need seat belts too?”

“If you can get it on him” I chuckled.

I inserted the key into the ignition and started the car, only for it to cough out on me.

“Oh c'mon, Herbert!” I muttered angrily.

“Can't we just get a new Herbert?” Roman asked from the back.

“What?” I asked, glancing over at him as I simultaneously started the car.

“Can't we trade in old Herbert for a newer, shinier Herbert?”

“Manny, old Herbert is grandpa's old car, given to him by my grandpa. It's a classic. We can't just sell it.”

“So let's buy a new car.”

“We're saving for a house, remember?”

I frowned and turned the key again. Herbert coughed.

“Mommy, can I get my... achoo!” Roman sneezed.

I let go of the key and turned to face him.

“Manny, are you okay? Can you breathe okay? Is your throat closing up?”

“I just sneezed, Mommy. I'm okay.”

I let out a breath and nodded.

“Okay.”
