~Aiden~

“How are you making me like hiking?” she asked.

I chuckled.

“Because I'm the best hiking pal.”

The smile she flashed me over her shoulder was an arrow straight to the heart.

Damn, I would let this girl do me in all over again.

It was a beautiful, cloudless autumn day with only a very slight breeze.

“It's beautiful up here,” she said as we strolled along a narrow trail through the dense trees. “I am going to miss this when we go back.”

"Yeah, me too" I answered, and it was the truth.

The cabin was the first permanent home I bought. It was peaceful and serene. And I was close to nature. Right now, it was letting me be close to the woman I loved and so of course I was going to miss it.

“What's been your favorite place to live so far?” Breanna suddenly asked.

I wanted to say, Virginia, because of her. But the thought of going to have to be distant from her in Virginia however, hurt me to the core.

“You know what?” she asked when I didn't respond, and I cocked an eyebrow in surprise, “Don't answer that.”

“Brea...”

She shook her head and reached for my hand.

“No, please,” she whispered. “Let's just enjoy this. The time we have left. Right now.”

I didn't know how to respond to that, so I just gave her hand a light squeeze and continued down the narrow path to the nearby lake. Her comment made sense, but it still hurt. I had to remember that we had a very clear expiration date.

God.

At one point, the path narrowed significantly as the forest got thicker. Breanna took the lead with me behind her. I admired how smoothly she traversed over the tree roots and rocks, almost like she was dancing along the trail.

A few days alone with her and I don't know how it was even poss but she'd gotten more beautiful over the hours and having too much heart was usually called a weakness but with Breanna, it made her more attractive.

Any man was lucky to be in her presence. The thought of her ex cheating on her and willingly letting her go depressed me, so I shook my head. Suddenly, Breanna slipped, and I reached for her before I even knew I'd reacted. She caught herself but flashed me a thankful look over her shoulder when my hand gripped onto her elbow to help her stay upright and damn.

This was hard.

I was so torn between what I wanted and what was the right thing to do at this moment that I didn't notice her turn all the way around.

“Aiden,” she asked worriedly, the smile slipping off her lips. “What's wrong?”

I just shook my head.

“I was just worried about you getting hurt. Are you okay?” I asked.

“Yeah I just slipped a little. I'm fine.”

I rubbed the back of my neck.

“Maybe we should be heading back—”

“Hey,” she urged and gripped my hand when I tried to pull away. “What's going on, Aiden?”

“Nothing, Brie. I was just worried. What if you fell? Broke your arm again... stuff like that.”

She didn't look like she was buying it. But instead of saying anything else, she just tugged on my hand until it forced me to take a step closer to her. She reached her free hand out and cupped my face, all the while her eyes captivated mine.
