This isn't how I'd envisioned telling my father or the club about Alexis.

I'd played it all out in my head a million times. I'd ask her to come and meet my family, and she'd agree without hesitation. We'd stroll into the bar, my arm casually slung around her shoulders. All the brothers would stare, and it would piss me right off, but she'd only have eyes for me.

But as we all sat in church, all the boys around the table minus Tank and a few prospects tidying up the lose ends, I recounted the speech I'd given to my father not long beforehand.

As I finished up, I looked around the room at the faces of the men before me. They all had that same fire in their eyes that no doubt was reflected in mine. In that moment I was beyond grateful for the strong brotherhood the club provided, that my father had built from the ground up. These men would follow me into war without question.

Good on ya, lad. Gunner, the current VP was the first to speak. Woulda done the same thing me self in your shoes.

Nodding and murmurs of agreement echoed around the room.

What's the fuckers deal? Do we know if he's affiliated with anyone?

I don't know his name, she never told me. But I'll speak with her when she's ready and get Tech onto it, I answered.

Speaking of Tech... Grunter piped up.
I wasn't gunna bring this to the table but since this has all come about and it involves this Alexis woman I suppose I better.

The second he mentioned it involving Alexis he had my full attention.

Bring the files up Tech.

After tapping away at his laptop for what felt like an eternity, he spun it around, revealing his screen to the room.

Photos. Of Alexis and I that night at the bar near her work. Then again at the mall, several different shots of us in different shops, then getting into the truck. Someone had been fucking following us, that much was obvious.

We still have the hard copies somewhere. Courier dropped it at the front desk outta the blue, shit, I don't even remember how long ago. Didn't think much of it, assumed it was some hooker you were banging and brushed it off. But if she means something to ya, then that's different. Its a threat.

Then it was Tech's turn.

After looking into things, I concluded it was the Serpant's handiwork. We just assumed they were too pussy to retaliate in person, so we're trying scare tactics, grasping at straws so to speak. But after digging a little deeper, it seems our Serpant friends are doing someone else's dirty work.

Seems a few of their members have so expensive habits and the club got into shit financially. Someone bailed them out, and I guess now they basically own them. We just need to find out who that someone is. I tried for a while and came up empty handed, but I'll make it top priority.

Someone has it in for the club, Grunter growled. We need to find out who, and teach them we're not to be fucked with.

Here here! Shouted the brothers in unison, before church was dismissed and we filed out of the club room.

Heading straight for the infirmary, I tried the door only to find it locked. Fuck. What was taking so long in there?  I thought about kicking the door in and finding out for myself, but wisely chose against it, instead heading for the bar. Something strong was sure to calm my nerves.

Nothing added up. It made more sense that the Serpants were just some wannabe chapter tryna make it with the big boys by encroaching on our turf. But if they were working for someone? That was an entirely different shitstorm completely.

We didn't know the enemy. Didn't know their motives. Just that they were watching us, sending men out to attack or gun us down. And they knew about Alexis and I. That part sent a shiver down my spine. Just as I'd tried to save her from the demons of her own past, she was suddenly being dragged into a whole new nightmare. But I vowed with every inch of my being I'd keep her safe. No harm would come to the woman who made my heart beat, who breathed life back into my cold empty soul.

Staring blankly into my drink as I contemplated life, I hadn't noticed Jenny appear in the doorway, eyes fixed on me. I was across the room and infront of her before she could take another step.

Calm down Reaper, she's ok, she spoke calmly, patting my arm. The injury was small but deep. Nicked an artery so she lost a lot of blood, but Doc managed to get it all fixed up. She had a broken nose too so he reset that while she was out to it. She's sleeping now, needs her rest.

Relieved beyond compare, I let out a sigh of relief. Can I see her?

You can, but Reaper... she trailed off. Gunner told me whats going on. You know if she's not safe she has to stay here at the clubhouse for everyones sake. Doc said when she wakes she can get set up in a room, and I can only imagine you'll want her in yours... I can only hope you'll make it presentable for a 'real woman'. Rumor has it their standards are slightly higher than the whores floating round this place, she walked off with a laugh.

Jenny had been an upstanding member of the community before she met Gunner, fell in love, and got dragged into the chaos that is club life. But she'd been here as long as I can remember, and had sort of become like a mother to me. I knew she was waiting for Tank and I to step up into the Pres and VP roles so Gunner could step down, and they could enjoy as normal a retirement as an old biker couple could.

She was right though. The dirty clothes, half burnt cigarettes, and empty beer cans didn't exactly scream welcome home baby.

Pulling myself away from the direction of the infirmary, I took the stairs two at a time, heading upto my room to do the fastest spring clean that you ever did see.
