Despite Matilda's consistent teasing and promise of a celebration, Juniper made it through her 'birthday' unscathed. No random students wished her happy birthday, no singing at any of the meals, no special treatment. She even got to sit in the library after dinner and finish her potions homework that she was assigned that morning.
It was marvellous.
What wasn't marvellous, was when three tables over, two students started 'whispering' loudly, which, given how quiet the library was, could've been considered yelling. Once Juniper mustered up the courage, she turned to shush them, her eyes catching Ron and Harry's, who shut up immediately."Sorry." Harry squeaked, his hands flying to cover the paper they were couched over, which piqued Juniper's interest even more.
"What are you doing?" She raised her eyebrows, slowly pulling away from the table she was sitting at.
"Nothing." Ron hardened his jaw, trying to look tougher than he was.
"I didn't ask you, Won-won." Juniper rolled her eyes, walking over to sit with them. "Shouldn't you be with Lav-lav?"
"Who told-."
"Just because Hermione isn't talking to you, doesn't mean she's not talking to me." Juniper shrugged with a smile, her eyes on Harry's hands. "What are you doing?"
"We're..." Harry started, glancing at Ron for reassurance, who gave an angry grunt in response, sulking with his arms crossed over his chest. Harry moved his hands, revealing the Marauders map. "We're trying to find Malfoy."
"Why?" Juniper turned her nose up, her eyes tracking the map for Draco.
"He keeps disappearing." Harry told her. "Plus I overheard him trying to plan something with Crabbe and Goyle at our apparition lessons."
"Oh yeah, 'The Club With No Brain', as I call them." Juniper attempted a joke, but was met with blank stares. "O-okay. How are you two going with apparition anyway?"
"Easy." Harry answered nonchalantly, like he was a natural, which he probably was.
"Yeah, piece of cake." Ron leant back in his chair proudly.
"You'd want to be, considering how good Fred and George are at it." Juniper laughed, getting another low energy response. "I don't want to brag, but I thought it was easy too. I've done it before with... uhm..." She trailed off, wanting to keep Lucius' name as far away from her as possible.
"Did you come over here for a reason?" Ron asked, trying to get Harry back on track.
"I was going to tell you to shut up because you were whispering louder than the average Banshee. But spying on people with the map sounds more interesting than my potions work."
"I think it's only spying if you can see where the person is." Harry groaned in frustration. "Which I'm realising is a lot to ask for when you have a map that knows where everyone is, what they're doing, every minute of everyday."
"Poetic." Juniper muttered, leaning over to look around the map again. "I can try and figure something out tonight? Catch him in the common room when he passes through?"
"I thought Fred told you to stay away from him." Ron growled, his eyes darkening from across the table.
"I'm not going to stalk him again." Juniper rolled her eyes, leaning in to whisper to them. "Fred doesn't have to know. And I mean, it's hard to stay away from someone when you share a common room with them."
"Didn't he ask you to stay away for your own safety?"
"Ugh! Do you want me to help you or not? I'm a resource you guys aren't using well enough. I literally live behind enemy lines." Juniper groaned, begging to be included for once. "Plus, Fred knows I'll do the opposite of what he asks me to. I'm like a wild horse that can't be tamed."
