Before any of the Sigma 17 members had ended up at the same academy, they all went to a little academy where they were taught basic stuff of Cybertron. Boulder didn't really have a good time with this though, Chase probably would've been the same case if he wasn't home schooled.
Boulder was often on his own in his academy, unable to really find bots his age who had the same interest and so he didn't have any deep friendships with any of them. he spent most of his time doing things that he loved rather than actually getting to know other bots, but he didn't have a problem socializing if the opportunity came up.
He really wanted to focus on what he was planning to do for himself, figuring out what he liked for when he did eventually have to pick the academy of his choice. His creators did not mind what Boulder was doing since they supported most of his choices, but they always made sure to try and get him to know others every once in a while.
Besides what Boulder did though, he was a good mech, he never tried to get himself into any trouble and made sure to behave properly. He struggled with understanding some things at times but he had his strengths and his weaknesses, leaving him to be rather smart in certain areas.
Despite being lonely most of the time, he never really was in the end.
