"It is decided then...?" Layla could only look at her mother dishearted, wondering what could possible be her answer to this repeatedly answered question.
"Don't I have a say in that?" She snapped before Layla could find it in herself to move her mouth.
She tilt her head, which is paining her by the way. She didn't stop by just to have Umma scoffing and mumbling at her every move including her breathing.
Heck she doesn't even have time for this, with her trying to handle over her work and have a successful transition from here to the school in UK, then organizing their life here and the one they're about to have and not forget the visa applications, she barely have time to breath.
She had a very very serious argument with Shuriam that in a fit of anger they both said unfavorable words to each other and Shuriam packed and left her house.
Did she feel guilty? As hell she did but she has learn to put herself first. That's why she is leaving even though his wedding is in a month's time.
She can't wait until then and she doesn't even want to. She simply want everything to be over with and her staring afresh with her daughter.
But no matter how she explained this to Shuriam, he refused to understand even proposing that she leave Rauda here and go all alone.
Let her arrange her life there before she comes for the girl, that way she will be back just in time for the wedding. But Layla is adamant.
Wherever she is, Rauda will be there with her except when she is dead. Her words where very clear, that it annoyed her entire family but it only made her remember her own source of abandonment.
And whenever she does, fear consumed her in a worst possible way that she couldn't even imagine, which only leaves her with the option of reciting the names of her Rabb.
That was Umma's words then. She will come back for them once she is settled, which she never did.
She can't do that to her daughter. Not now, not ever. Not when she is able to control it.
She may have gotten over the wound she has sustained from their Father's dead and Umma's abandonment but she will never put her daughter through it.
So she is here to apologize to Shuraim, begged him if she has to, for him to understand her. Understand her fear and her concerns.
She wants him to come back home with her, for her last days here. This past years they have spend together are much more meaningful to her than their whole lives together.
She can't lose the friendship and the confidance she has found in him.
"I hope you're happy Layla." Umma's voice cut through her thoughts yet again but this time, contrary to earlier, her voice is soft. So is her eyes which are fixed on Layla.
It made Layla to unexpectedly trail her unbelievable gaze to her mother wondering if she heard her right.
And for the few times that she could count over the course of her life, she could see that maternal love and affection from every mother in Umma.
"I love you like any mother love her child..." Umma confessed even though deep down she believe Layla knows that. Cause Layla is a mother and a damn good one at that. So she believes Layla understood her actions, she only wanted what is best for her.
"I thought I knew what's best for you. Turns out I was wrong." She admitted defeated then added a sad chuckled.
Still Layla could not bring herself to utter a word while looking at her mother with a heavy heart.
