900 words.Renjun knew something was off the moment he woke up. His stomach churned uncomfortably, and a faint nausea lingered as he got ready for practice. He brushed it off, thinking it was just something he ate the day before. They had a packed schedule, and he couldn't afford to slow down.
The practice room buzzed with energy as the rest of NCT Dream arrived, joking around and warming up. Mark was leading stretches while Jisung tried to mimic a particularly complicated routine. Renjun plastered on a smile, determined not to show how he was feeling.
"Renjun, you good?" Jaemin asked, noticing his slightly pale face.
"Yeah, just tired," Renjun replied, forcing a chuckle.
But as they began running through the choreography, the twisting in his stomach worsened. Every spin, every jump made his nausea grow until it was impossible to ignore. His steps grew sluggish, his focus slipping.
"Renjun, you're falling behind," Haechan teased, nudging him lightly.
Renjun nodded but couldn't muster a response. The room felt unbearably warm, the lights too bright. And then, in the middle of a sharp turn, his stomach gave in.
He froze, clutching his abdomen, his face going pale. Mark noticed first, calling out, "Renjun, are you okay..."
Before anyone could react, Renjun bolted to the corner of the room where a bin sat. His retching echoed through the space as the other members stared, wide-eyed.
Jeno and Mark rushed over immediately, while Jaemin grabbed a water bottle from the side. Haechan looked concerned, for once dropping his playful demeanor, and even Jisung froze, unsure of what to do.
"Renjun, hey, breathe," Jeno said softly, crouching beside him and rubbing his back. Mark knelt next to him, holding the bin steady. Renjun gasped, spitting out the last bit of bile as tears pricked the corners of his eyes from the strain.
"Sorry..." he whispered hoarsely, his voice shaky.
"Don't apologize, man," Mark said firmly. "You're sick. That's nothing to feel bad about."
"Let's call it a day," Jeno announced, looking up at the others. "He's in no shape to keep going."
There was no argument from anyone. Jaemin quickly cleaned up the area while Jisung packed Renjun's things. Haechan offered to call the manager to let him know what happened.
Back at the dorm, Renjun collapsed onto the couch, his head spinning. Jeno gently draped a blanket over him while Mark headed to the kitchen to prepare something light for him to sip on.
"You've gotta tell us when you're feeling this bad, Renjun," Jeno scolded lightly, sitting on the floor beside him.
"I didn't want to be a burden," Renjun mumbled, his voice barely above a whisper.
"You're not a burden," Jeno replied firmly, adjusting the blanket. "We're a team. You'd do the same for us."
Mark returned with a glass of water and a sports drink, kneeling by Renjun's side. "Sip on this, okay? Small sips," he instructed, holding out the sports drink.
Renjun obeyed, though his hands trembled slightly as he took the glass. Mark steadied it for him, his usual leaderly patience on full display.
"Anything else hurting? Headache? Fever?" Mark asked, his concern evident.
"Just... my stomach," Renjun murmured, leaning back against the couch cushions.
"Okay. No solid food for now," Mark said, glancing at Jeno, who nodded in agreement.
The rest of the members stayed quiet in their rooms, giving Renjun space while Jeno and Mark remained by his side. Jeno kept an eye on him, occasionally rubbing soothing circles on his arm whenever Renjun shifted uncomfortably.
"I'm sorry for ruining practice," Renjun said after a while, his voice weak.
"Renjun, stop," Jeno said, shaking his head. "No one cares about practice right now. We just want you to feel better."
"Exactly," Mark chimed in. "Don't think about anything else. Just rest."
The hours dragged on, with Renjun dozing off and waking intermittently. Each time he stirred, Jeno or Mark would offer him water or check if he was feeling any better. Once, he had to rush to the bathroom, but Jeno was quick to help him up and guide him there without a word of complaint.
By the evening, the worst of it seemed to have passed. Renjun still looked pale and exhausted, but the constant nausea had subsided. Mark handed him a bowl of plain rice porridge, coaxing him to eat a few spoonfuls.
"You're looking a little better," Jeno said, smiling softly.
"Thanks to you guys," Renjun replied, his voice still faint.
Mark patted his shoulder. "That's what we're here for. You'd do the same if it were one of us."
"Definitely," Jeno added, stretching his arms behind his head. "But next time, give us a heads-up if you're not feeling well. We can handle it, Renjun."
Renjun gave them a small smile, the warmth of their care outweighing his earlier embarrassment. "Okay. I will."
"Good," Mark said with a nod. "Now, get some rest. You've earned it."
As Renjun drifted off again, the comforting presence of his friends nearby, he realized how lucky he was to have them. No matter how tough things got, he could always count on his members to have his back.
