I got this idea from my philosophy class, I hope you like it.
Congenital Insensitivity to Pain (CIP) is a rare genetic disorder where a person cannot feel physical pain. This condition is present from birth, and people with CIP can still feel touch and temperature, but they don't experience pain in response to injuries.
800 wordsTXT was preparing for their upcoming concert, and the energy was high. They'd been practicing their choreography for hours, each member's movements precise yet effortless. By now, they were working mostly on stamina—repeating parts of routines until they could perform perfectly even while exhausted.
Huening Kai was focused, pushing through each move, in sync with his members. To them, it seemed like he was holding up well, maybe even better than the others. But what his friends sometimes forgot was that he didn't feel fatigue in the same way; he didn't register the warning aches or the pain from small impacts. When he got hurt, he only noticed because of them.
As practice continued, the group took a quick water break, sitting around the room in a loose circle. Soobin stretched and glanced over at Huening, who had his head leaned back against the wall, his face looking paler than usual.
"Hey, Kai, you feeling alright?" Soobin asked, frowning a bit.
Huening Kai straightened and nodded, giving his usual easygoing grin. "Of course. I'm not even tired."
Soobin laughed, but his gaze lingered, slightly concerned. Huening was tough, but his inability to feel pain made everyone wary, even if they sometimes forgot about it in the midst of training. They continued their break, everyone relaxing, but that worry was already starting to linger in the back of Soobin's mind.
It happened just before the last round of practice. They were nailing a move where each member would leap forward one after the other, hitting a powerful pose on the beat. Huening Kai jumped, but when he landed, his foot slipped slightly on the polished floor, and he twisted to catch himself. The move continued, but his leg buckled.
At first, he thought nothing of it. He got up, brushed himself off, and started into the next sequence. But Soobin had seen his fall. "Huening, are you okay?" he called, pausing the practice.
Huening looked up, surprised at the interruption. "Yeah, yeah. I just slipped."
Yeonjun moved closer, his gaze sharp as he looked Huening Kai over. "Are you sure? You didn't feel anything?"
Huening shrugged. "It's fine. I didn't feel a thing."
But Taehyun noticed something odd: Huening was standing with his weight shifted onto his right leg, his left barely touching the ground. Concern flickered in his eyes. "Are you sure you can stand on it?"
Huening, frowning now, put weight on his left leg as if to prove his point. He took a few steps, even bounced lightly. "See? No problem."
They decided to continue, but Yeonjun stayed close to Huening Kai, glancing over every few seconds, clearly unconvinced.
When they finished practice, Huening Kai went to grab his bag but stumbled, grabbing the bench to catch himself. Soobin was next to him instantly, helping him to sit down. "Alright, that's it. You're not walking on that foot until we check it."
Huening Kai tried to argue, but Soobin had already called Taehyun over, who insisted they take off his shoe to see what was going on.
As they carefully peeled off his sneaker and sock, everyone froze. His ankle was swollen, a faint bruise already forming, and when they inspected it further, they found he couldn't move it without the swelling shifting in painful ways. Soobin's face tightened.
Yeonjun cursed softly. "How long has it been like this?"
"I... I don't know," Huening Kai stammered, finally looking worried. "I really didn't feel anything."
Without hesitation, Beomgyu grabbed his phone to call their manager, and soon, they were headed to the hospital.
After a long wait in the emergency room, the doctor finally returned with the X-rays. Huening Kai had a hairline fracture in his ankle from the fall earlier that day. He would need a cast and several weeks of rest to heal properly. The news was a blow to everyone.
When the doctor left, a silence filled the room, and Huening Kai looked around at his friends. They all looked relieved that it wasn't worse, but their faces were somber. He'd known his condition was serious, but seeing the worry on his friends' faces made him feel it in a new way.
"I'm really sorry, guys," Huening Kai said quietly, looking down.
Soobin put a hand on his shoulder. "Kai, this isn't your fault. We know you try your best to be careful. But... it's hard for us to remember, too, that you can get hurt without realizing it."
Yeonjun sighed, crossing his arms. "I think from now on, one of us should always keep an eye on you during practice."
Beomgyu nodded, half-smiling. "Like a pain monitor, just for you."
Taehyun added softly, "It might feel a bit annoying, but we need to be careful. This isn't the first time, and we can't let something like this happen again."
Huening Kai smiled, feeling a strange mix of embarrassment and gratitude. His friends were serious, genuinely concerned for him. He realized they all felt the pain he couldn't—a reminder that he wasn't alone, even with this strange, sometimes frightening condition.
As the doctor came back to set his cast, Huening Kai looked at his friends, feeling an overwhelming warmth. They might not always understand what he was going through, but he knew they'd always be there, feeling what he couldn't, keeping him safe in ways he sometimes couldn't do for himself.
