700 words. The soft hum of the dorm's heater barely masked the quiet groans coming from Hanbin's bunk. Jiwoong, who had been scrolling through his phone on the couch, glanced toward the bedroom door for what felt like the tenth time in the last hour. Something was wrong.
Earlier that evening, Hanbin had looked a little pale, his usual bright energy noticeably dimmed. He had waved it off, blaming exhaustion from practice, but Jiwoong knew better. And now, as another pitiful whimper sounded from behind the door, Jiwoong decided enough was enough.
Pushing himself off the couch, he walked over and knocked gently before stepping in.
The room was dark except for the dim glow of Hanbin's phone screen, discarded on his bed. Hanbin himself was curled into a miserable ball under the covers, his face twisted in discomfort. His forehead glistened with sweat, and his breathing was uneven.
"Hanbin-ah," Jiwoong's voice was soft, but firm. "What's wrong?"
Hanbin peeked out from under the blankets, his expression a mix of embarrassment and suffering. "...Hyung." His voice was weak. "I think I have food poisoning or something..."
Jiwoong frowned, stepping closer. "Since when?"
Hanbin swallowed hard, grimacing. "Since lunch, maybe? I thought it would go away, but..." His voice trailed off as his stomach let out a loud, angry gurgle, and within seconds, he was scrambling out of bed toward the bathroom.
Jiwoong winced as he heard the unmistakable sound of retching followed by a pained groan. Without hesitation, he followed, stopping just outside the bathroom door.
"Hanbin-ah, I'm coming in."
There was no protest, only another groan in response. Jiwoong pushed the door open to find Hanbin leaning weakly against the toilet, his face ghostly pale. His hands trembled as he tried to steady himself against the sink.
Jiwoong sighed, crouching beside him. "You should have told me earlier." He reached out, pressing the back of his hand against Hanbin's clammy forehead. "You're burning up."
"I didn't want to bother anyone," Hanbin muttered, closing his eyes.
Jiwoong clicked his tongue in disapproval. "Idiot. You're more important than some inconvenience." He carefully helped Hanbin sit against the wall, handing him a glass of water. "Drink. You need to stay hydrated."
Hanbin obeyed, though his hands were shaky. Jiwoong watched him closely, his heart aching at how weak the younger looked.
"Have you been to the doctor?" Jiwoong asked.
Hanbin shook his head. "I thought it was just a stomach bug, but... it's really bad." He winced, pressing a hand to his stomach. "I think it might be... E. coli or something."
Jiwoong's expression darkened. "That's serious, Hanbin. We need to get you checked properly."
Hanbin groaned. "I don't think I can even stand, hyung."
Jiwoong didn't hesitate. "Then I'll help you."
Gently, he hooked an arm around Hanbin's waist and lifted him up, steadying him. Hanbin sagged against him, his strength almost completely drained. Jiwoong held him carefully, supporting most of his weight.
"It's okay," Jiwoong murmured. "I've got you."
With careful steps, he guided Hanbin back to his bed, settling him down before grabbing a damp cloth to wipe the sweat from his forehead. Hanbin's eyes fluttered shut at the cool touch, exhaling shakily.
Jiwoong stayed beside him, running a hand through his damp hair soothingly. "I'll call the manager and let them know. We should take you to the hospital."
Hanbin blinked up at him tiredly. "Hyung... you don't have to stay up. You've got schedules tomorrow."
Jiwoong scoffed. "Like I care about that right now. You're more important."
Hanbin's lips twitched into a small, tired smile. "...Thank you."
Jiwoong only squeezed his hand in response.
"I'll always take care of you, Hanbin. So stop trying to suffer alone, okay?"
Hanbin nodded weakly, eyes fluttering shut as exhaustion took over. Jiwoong stayed by his side, determined to make sure he would be okay.
Because that's what family did.
