900 words.
The morning sun filtered weakly through the curtains, casting a soft glow over the dorm. Soobin lay in bed, his body unbearably heavy, heat radiating off him in waves. His head pounded, and his throat was dry and scratchy. Every muscle ached as if he had run a marathon in his sleep.
But he couldn't stay in bed.
He had to push through.
Taking a shaky breath, he forced himself to sit up, his head spinning instantly. He pressed his palm against his forehead, squeezing his eyes shut. He felt like he was on fire.
It doesn't matter.
He glanced at the clock. The others would be waking up soon, getting ready for practice. He had to act normal. He couldn't be the reason they fell behind.
Slowly, he swung his legs over the bed, his feet meeting the cool floor. Even that small movement sent a shiver down his spine despite the heat burning under his skin. His body begged him to lie back down, to just rest, but he clenched his jaw and pushed himself up.
The second he stood, his knees wobbled. His vision swam. The room tilted dangerously, and his fingers barely caught the edge of his desk in time to keep himself upright. His breaths were uneven, his chest tight.
But he had to push through.
By the time he made it out of his room and into the living area, the members were already gathering their things for practice. Yeonjun was fixing his hair in the hallway mirror, Taehyun was adjusting his bag strap, Huening Kai was yawning into his hoodie, and Beomgyu...
"Soobin?"
Beomgyu's voice barely registered before everything tilted again. His legs gave out, and the world blurred into a dizzy mix of light and color.
Before he could hit the floor, strong arms caught him.
"Soobin!"
It was Beomgyu. The panic in his voice sent a wave of worry through the group.
Yeonjun was the first to rush over, pressing his hand to Soobin's forehead. His eyes widened in alarm. "He's burning up...he's way too hot."
Taehyun was already moving, running off to grab the thermometer, while Huening Kai hovered anxiously. "Hyung, why didn't you say anything?" His voice was small, laced with concern.
Soobin wanted to answer, to say something reassuring, but his tongue felt heavy. His eyelids drooped as exhaustion pulled at him.
A beep from the thermometer broke the tense silence. Taehyun's face darkened as he read the number.
"40 degrees," he murmured. "This is really bad."
"That's it, no practice for you," Yeonjun said firmly. "We're taking care of you first."
They half-carried, half-walked Soobin back to his room, laying him down as gently as they could. Huening Kai quickly grabbed a blanket, tucking it over him, while Beomgyu knelt beside the bed, brushing damp strands of hair from Soobin's forehead.
"You're so dumb," Beomgyu whispered, voice shaking slightly. "Why would you try to hide this?"
Soobin blinked up at him, eyes glassy with fever. "Didn't... wanna slow you guys down..."
Beomgyu's expression crumpled. "Idiot. You're more important than practice."
"Way more important," Taehyun added as he handed over the fever medicine. "Here, take this. It'll help."
Soobin tried to sit up, but his arms felt like lead. Immediately, Yeonjun was there, slipping an arm behind his shoulders and lifting him just enough for him to drink the medicine. Soobin let his head rest against Yeonjun's shoulder for a moment, too tired to move.
"Rest, okay?" Yeonjun murmured, his voice softer than usual.
Huening Kai returned with a damp cloth, placing it gently on Soobin's forehead. "We're staying right here, hyung."
And they did.
Beomgyu stayed by his side, his hand resting lightly on Soobin's blanket-covered arm, as if afraid he'd disappear if he let go. Taehyun kept checking the thermometer every hour, making sure the fever was going down. Huening Kai hummed softly under his breath, a quiet, comforting melody. Yeonjun watched over them all, making sure everyone took turns resting while still keeping Soobin at the center of their care.
Even through his fevered haze, Soobin felt it.
Warmth—not from his fever, but from them.
By evening, his fever had dropped significantly. It wasn't gone, but it was no longer dangerously high. When Soobin finally stirred awake, the first thing he saw was Taehyun sitting beside him, replacing the damp cloth on his forehead.
"You're awake," Taehyun said softly. "How do you feel?"
Soobin swallowed, his throat dry. "Better... I think."
Taehyun gave a small smile. "Your fever's still there, but it's much lower now."
Soobin shifted slightly, his gaze moving around the room. Yeonjun was dozing in the chair nearby, Huening Kai curled up at the foot of his bed, and Beomgyu, still at his side, his head resting on his folded arms.
They stayed.
A lump formed in Soobin's throat, different from the scratchiness of the fever. A mix of gratitude, guilt, and warmth. He turned back to Taehyun, voice barely above a whisper.
"Thank you."
Taehyun reached out, squeezing Soobin's wrist lightly. "Next time, don't hide it, okay? We're a team. You don't have to do things alone."
Soobin let out a small, tired chuckle. "Okay."
And for the first time that day, he let himself close his eyes—not to push through the pain, not to fight the exhaustion, but to rest, knowing that his members would be there when he woke up.
