900 words.Stray Kids were buzzing with excitement as they arrived at the prestigious Japanese award show. The energy was palpable, with artists mingling, fans cheering from afar, and the anticipation of their performance lingering in the air. Felix, as always, loved the vibrant atmosphere. The flashing lights, the cheers, the camaraderie – it was all a reminder of why he cherished moments like these.
Earlier that day, Stray Kids had performed their latest song, "The Sound," to thunderous applause. The track was a testament to their growth and power as a group, and it was especially significant to Felix. There was a certain irony to the song title, considering his journey with sound had always been a little different.
Felix had been born deaf, but thanks to cochlear implants, he had experienced the world of sound for most of his life. While he generally thrived in the noisy world of music, there were moments when the sound became too much.
Today was one of those days.
His cochlear implants were acting up. The mix of the loud music, the constant noise of the crowd, and the chatter backstage was starting to overwhelm him. The feedback from his implants was erratic, turning every sound into a grating buzz that made it hard to concentrate. His head throbbed, and the usually vibrant atmosphere became suffocating.
He shifted uncomfortably in his seat, trying to adjust the volume on his implants, but it didn't help much. The noise continued to gnaw at his nerves, making him more and more on edge. Felix clenched his fists, willing himself to stay calm, but it was getting harder with each passing moment.
As the event continued, the cacophony around him only intensified. Conversations overlapped, laughter rose and fell in waves, and the music playing in the background seemed to pound directly into his skull. Each sound felt like a needle, sharp and unrelenting. Felix's breaths became shallow, and a knot of anxiety began to form in his chest. The vibrant atmosphere he once loved was now a storm he couldn't escape.
His teammates were scattered around the room, talking to other artists and taking in the event. Felix tried to ground himself by focusing on his friends' faces, their gestures, anything that could pull him out of the sensory overload. But even that wasn't enough.
Chan noticed Felix's discomfort. He leaned over, his voice low but steady. "Felix, you look like you're struggling. Why don't you take your implants out for a bit?"
Felix hesitated, glancing around at the lively room. "But what if we have to go on stage again?"
Chan grinned, trying to lighten the mood. "We'll let you know, don't worry. No one will notice. Just take them out. It's kind of ironic, you know? Our song is 'The Sound,' and here you are, needing to escape it."
Felix chuckled softly at the irony. "Yeah, the song's about sound, and I'm literally taking mine out."
"Exactly," Chan laughed. "Go ahead, take off your sound. We'll cover for you."
Reluctantly, Felix nodded and removed his cochlear implants, immediately enveloped in a cocoon of silence. The sudden absence of noise was both disorienting and comforting. The tension in his shoulders began to ease as he settled into the quiet.
In the silence, Felix felt the world slow down. The oppressive weight of the noise lifted, replaced by a soothing calm. He could see the mouths of people moving, the expressions on their faces, the rhythm of the music as it made others sway – but none of it reached him. It was like watching a beautifully choreographed performance from behind a soundproof glass. The visual cues became more pronounced, more vibrant, and Felix found a new kind of serenity in observing without hearing.
He watched as the other artists danced and performed without sound, a familiar sight that took him back to his childhood. Back then, he had danced in silence often, relying on the vibrations he felt through the floor and the rhythm he created in his mind. Now, as he watched the room in quiet, he smiled, reminded of those simpler times.
Whenever Stray Kids were called on stage for an award or a brief appearance, Felix would quickly reattach his implants, enduring the noise for the short moments they were necessary. But the knowledge that he could return to his bubble of silence kept him calm and grounded.
Despite the occasional adjustments, none of the fans or other attendees seemed to notice anything unusual. Felix was grateful for the subtle support of his members, who kept close to him, ensuring he was comfortable.
By the end of the night, Felix had managed to enjoy the event in a way that suited him best. The irony of "The Sound" playing out in silence wasn't lost on him, but it was a reminder of how adaptable he had become. He could navigate both worlds – sound and silence – and find joy in both.
As they left the venue, Felix turned to Chan with a smile. "Thanks, hyung. That was exactly what I needed."
Chan slung an arm around Felix's shoulders. "Anytime, Lix. Sometimes, even the sound needs a break."
Felix laughed, feeling light and relieved. "Yeah, and silence isn't so bad either."
Sorry for the bad jokes, I was listening to "the sound" and the idea came. Anyway thanks for reading and hope you like it.
