surprised would be an understatement, it felt like going to a mc donalds and coming across your favorite celebrity.
"sunwoo?"
my voice came out soft, as if my brain refused to believe my eyes.
"stop the dramatics" he said bluntly. "where's my hug?"
before i could react, he stepped closer, his fingers barely touching my shoulder when jeonghan appeared beside me and pulled me towards himself.
"you are?" jeonghan asked, his voice casual, his glare screaming 'fight me'. sunwoo matched the stare almost too willingly as if asking 'you sure?'.
i chuckled nervously as their silent showdown continued. i wasn't expecting free entertainment on my birthday. but here we are.
"this is sunwoo." i gestured towards him. "remember? sunwoo?"
"not at all." jeonghan replied without missing a beat.
"confident and clueless." sunwoo nodded as if ticking off a check list. "this must be the boyfriend."
jeonghan raised an eyebrow, visibly thrown off by the audacity. what can i say? it runs in the family.
the song family dna practically comes with the warning - may contain sass and the tendency to spontaneously combust into flames.
"this is my younger brother." i said squeezing jeonghan's arm to remind him that there was more to see in the world except sunwoo's completely unfazed face.
"how-" jeonghan started but i cut him off before he could spiral into a full on investigation.
"remember when you rejected me and told me to fix my life?"
that's not entirely accurate but i am just summarizing here. jeonghan glanced at me disapprovingly but i continued anyway.
"so i found him and we met after ten years-"
"twelve." sunwoo corrected, his tone neutral. if he felt hurt he didn't show it.
"r-right." i stammered, glancing at him awkwardly. "we got in contact last year."
it was difficult -
okay. let's not sugar coat it.
it was awkward.
meeting him after so long was like trying to get to know a stranger but with shared childhood trauma. he'd followed my steps, leaving home at 18, but i was too far along for him to reach. i was afraid he would resent me for leaving him behind but he was only mildly sour about it. good enough i guess.
"i came all the way here to wish you." sunwoo said as if reading off a script.
"just kidding" he added after a beat. "i had a meeting in seoul and thought i'd take my revenge by ruining your day."
of course.
someone has to make sure i don't feel too important especially after jeonghan made the morning all about me.
"you definitely ruined it." jeonghan muttered under his breath and i shot him a glare.
"happy birthday arin." sunwoo said with nothing to suggest that he had a soul.
"yay." he exclaimed dryly. "here's my brotherly hug"
he pulled me into an awkward hug, his hands stiff on my shoulders, as he deliberately stepped between me and jeonghan.
"arin?" jeonghan exclaimed as if sunwoo just swore at me. "aren't you 5 years younger?"
"eunw-" sunwoo began, pulling away from the hug to address jeonghan.
