I N A Y A

As soon as the door clicked shut behind me, I pressed my back against the wall beside it. Silent sobs escaped me, muffled beneath my palm as my body shook.

“I’m sorry.” I whispered, moving away with each step shattering me further apart.

I descended the stairs and walked into the kitchen. Filling a glass of water for myself, I sipped it slowly, trying to stabilize my breaths quietly.

I hoped, leaning against the counter as I prayed silently, “Allah, Let him return to you, let him realise, please.”

I splashed water to my face as many times as it took for me to calm down. Nothing helped, because despite the efforts,my fingers refused to stop shivering.

Stepping out of the kitchen, I was about to walk into the lawn when I saw the little light emanating from beneath Sasha's bedroom door.

I walked over, knocking once before she asked from the inside, “Who is it?”

“Sasha?”

She walked over and the doorknob turned as she opened the door. Her eyes met mine and she grinned widely, already grabbing me in, “Bhabhi! Come in.”

I just chuckled, following her inside. “You haven't slept yet?”

She shook her head, gathering the sheets and accessories as she began cleaning. “No, I have my tests coming up, so I had to complete these case studies before that.”

I hummed in understanding, just moving around and helping her quietly before she asked, her tone reluctant. “You had a fight with Bhai?”

I stilled, freezing for a second before replying, “Not a fight… Just a messy conversation.”

She giggled and made me sit in her makeshift ‘girly’ corner. “That’s one way to put it.”

This corner of her room was all soft pillows, fairy lights and dollhouses probably from her childhood. She kept them, groomed the dolls every time she felt like doing it.

“Lets make you feel better? I know my Bhai can be… you know, sometimes,” She asked, her eyes shining with an excited glint. I chuckled, looking away before shaking my head. “No, I'm fine.”

We sat on the mattresses for a while. I just checked through her dollhouses while she continued typing on her laptop. I tried to distract myself, but my brain refused to cooperate. It went circling back to the man on the floor above, god knows what he might be doing.

With reluctance, I spoke to Sasha, “Sashu… Can you just go check what Ahad is doing and inform me?”

She nodded, already placing the laptop aside before standing up. “I’ll prove to you I’m Asim Bhai’s sister, he’s the best at sneaking in.”

I laughed despite myself, my heart warming at the casualness of her. No doubt she was the sunshine of the Qureshis.

I paced in the room, the silence thick and suffocating. I kept looking at the door, expecting Sasha to walk in at any moment.

The door opened swiftly as she stepped in, her face normal and composed, relieving me a bit. Walking to me, she said, “He was in sujood, praying.”

My shoulders dropped, physically feeling as something within me breathed. I ran my fingers through my hair, saying, “Okay, I'll go then.”
