I N A Y A

The rays of setting sun seeping in, painted the kitchen in warm orange hues. I had returned a few minutes ago and was looking through the fridge for something to eat, frowning when I found nothing.

I reached for my phone but dropped the plan to order something online. Ahad had been really nagging me about eating unhealthy stuff and I could never bring myself to order something healthy when the pizza was clearly staring back at me through the screen.

So, instead, me being the obedient wife I was, I decided to cook something. Just when I reached for the vegetables, the doorbell rang.

I froze, my mind reeling with thoughts. Ahad had the password and also the keys.

I draped the dupatta around my head loosely, clutching my phone as I checked the security camera, relieved when I saw it was just Ahmed. A low chuckle escaped me when he waved at the camera.

I opened the door, letting him in as he greeted, "Assalamu'alaikum, Bhabhi!"

I replied to the greeting, turning on the lights in the hall as I gestured to him to sit. He dropped his bag on the couch when I asked, "Where were you yesterday?" recalling Ahad had been worried about him.

"I was in the mansion, had some work!"

"Sure?" I raised a brow, letting the small smirk show. He frowned, shooting me a narrow-eyed glare as he whined, "Come on, Bhabhi! You too?"

I laughed, enjoying his frustration before asking, "You wanna eat something?"

I walked into the kitchen and he followed me, eyeing everything simply. "Hmm. Isn't Bhai back yet?"

"I thought he was with yo- Don't touch that!!" I hissed when he leaned suspiciously close to my favourite silver black vase.

He chuckled, retreating his hand as he mumbled, "Alright! Also Bhai left an hour ago, I thought he came here... Mujhe jaldi aane ka kehkar abhi khud kahin ghoom rahe hai!"
(Warning me to return early, he himself is roaming somewhere now!)

I turned to him, putting on my best 'oh yeah?' furious face as I folded my arms on my chest. He snickered a little, clearing his throat as he stepped past me into the kitchen. "What can I help you with?"

"Chop these!" I handed over the vegetables to him, then the slab and knife he'd require when he eyed them weirdly and spoke, "I have corn... Maybe we can just pop them and eat?"

"Okay! Bring them!" I said, already relieved for the little work. After a long day at work, the last thing I'd have wanted to do was cooking.

Just when he left, I whistled a tune, watching out of the window simply when a notification on my phone caught my attention.

Unknown number:
'Who's that at your home, dove?'

My blood ran cold, fingers trembling as the phone threatened to slip. I looked outside through the window immediately, finding nothing suspicious when the phone buzzed again.

'Is he your friend?'

Who the heck was this psycho??? Such a coward!

Anger and panic rose in waves inside me, painful and heartwrenching. I inhaled sharply, running a hand down my face in an attempt to calm down.

After a few deep breaths, my rational brain activated finally: If he knew me or Ahad so well, didn't he know Ahmed?

Holding the phone tighter, I tested the waters as I typed back,

'You seem to know everything
about me, don't you know him?'

The dots didn't even appear as the message was dropped almost immediately,
