K A I F

I shut my eyes, a slow breath escaping me as my chest clenched with each sob escaping Zara.

I hated tears in her eyes, and the extent I could go to avoid them was undefined.

"Zara," I breathed into her hair, caressing the back of her head softly as my voice cracked with emotions. "It wasn't your fault, baby."

"I... I shouldn't have left her side," she looked up into my eyes once, shaking her head which was resting on my arm. She whimpered a second later, her fingers curling tighter into my shirt's collar as the tears didn't cease.

Sighing, I suppressed the wave of emotions rising within me. Pulling away, I cradled her face, my voice dropping to an assuring whisper when I murmured, "What's meant to happen, just happens, darling."

She sniffled, nodding slightly. I wiped her tears away gently, pressing my lips to her forehead once. "Now, stop worrying, and just rest okay?"

I drew her closer, a faint shiver traveling down my spine when she buried her face in the crook of my neck.

I kept assuring her, making sure her tears weren't there anymore before I felt her breath even out.

Pulling away, I checked the time, my brows rising when I found it was past midnight.

I casted another glance at now sleeping Zara, smiling at the sight of her red nose and cheeks. Giving her one final kiss, I walked out of the room, shutting the door behind me soundlessly.

Guards were stationed outside the bedrooms now, the security much tighter than before.

Stepping down, I entered the basement, feeling the chill bite my skin as this place had never felt this cold before. Tom joined me, asking, "Ahad isn't with you?"

"I think he's already in there," I replied, because I knew exactly how the air shifted when Ahad was angry.

Tom leaned against the threshold of the cell and I stood near the doorway, Zara's tears still fixed in my vision as I watched the old rag, slumped in the chair.

Then my eyes shifted to Ahad. He walked in last out of the meeting room, and the moment he did, the room changed.

And I knew there was no mercy coming after this. Because I had never seen him like that. His eyes were dark, so dark that the brown of his irises appeared black as they pinned Haamid beneath a terrifyingly calm gaze.

The silence in the room was thick as we stepped in too.

Ahad then moved, closed the door behind him before loosening the cuffs of his black shirt one by one. His face was so unreadable, calm, that it made something uneasy crawl beneath my skin.

Haamid laughed weakly through the blood in his mouth, unaware that he was just provoking Ahad further. "Your wife has quite the temper."

Wrong, very wrong thing to say.

Ahad walked toward him slowly. Then punched him. The blow was precise, landed with the perfect snap, clean, yet devastatingly brutal.

The crack echoed through the cold cell and Haamid's chair toppled sideways with him still restrained to it. Blood splattered across the concrete floor as a groan tore from his throat, and he spat blood to the side.

We didn't move or attempt to stop him. Because, why? My jaw clenched as I watched Ahad simply grab the chair upright again.

And hit him harder.
