I N A Y A
The event was progressing smoothly. We had our lunch together, and all the while, Ahad was busy speaking to Ahmed about something. Zara and I gossiped while Tom, Asim and Kaif were busy with themselves.
The Firdaus brothers had left a while ago, saying they were done with their work here.
“Why didn't your wife come, Tom?” Ahad asked after keeping his phone down.
I just looked at him. I didn't even know he had one.
“Safety purposes,” he muttered, focusing back on his food.
Kaif smirked knowingly, nudging him on purpose, “Did she kick you out?”
Zara snorted, hiding it behind a cough as we stifled laughter. Tom gave Kaif his usual flat look, gritting out, “How about I kick you out?”
“Guys,” Ahad interrupted, clearly wondering how a simple question had ended up into this.
Asim stood up, still chuckling as he patted Ahad on his shoulder. “You should know better than bringing up something to talk about when these two are together, Bhai.”
Ahad hummed with a smile. Zara and I kept laughing at the way Kaif was smirking at Tom, who kept glaring back at him.
Tom then rolled his eyes, turning to see Ahad before saying, “We’re expecting, five months now, so I can’t risk it.”
My eyes shone with happiness as smiles bloomed on our faces. Tom had a soft expression on his face as we congratulated him.
Kaif, obviously said something that earned him a smack on the back of his head. Tom, clearly exasperated, turned to Zara. “How do you even survive him?”
I answered on her behalf, “She’s the same.”
Ahad chuckled, the voice doing something it always did to my heart. Leaning in, he asked me, “Juice?”
“Oh, yes.” I nodded, and he called for a waiter, getting for all of us.
We then talked, laughed, like this wasn’t some global event but our personal occasion. We then drifted to work, as the round two of client meetings began.
We moved around, addressing a few people we knew and being introduced to a few we didn’t.
I had my fingers curled around Ahad’s arm, smiling at something the older couple in front of us said. Ahad said he knew them from the time when he was in New York.
I nodded along, ignoring the way my legs ached slightly with all the moving. To say I was exhausted would have been an understatement.
Leaning closer to Ahad’s shoulder, I asked, “When are we leaving?”
Because the contract was finalised, we didn't really have anything else to address here.
He checked his wristwatch. “You wanna leave?”
I nodded with a slight pout, whispering, “I feel tired.”
“We’ll leave in a while okay?” He assured and I hummed, just looking around.
The grand hall was swarming with people, dressed in fancy suits and pretty dresses. And everyone knew better than trusting each other, it was never what it appeared in the business world.
But my gaze halted when I caught someone familiar. I tried to look properly but couldn’t quite catch it.
I ignored it, then as I looked to my left side, my gaze met with Tanya’s.
