A H A D

Two days later;

"Look at these once!" Inaya said as she handed me a few printed photographs.

I looked up from the CCTV recordings I had been reviewing of every incident before, taking it from her as I scanned them.

Every picture zoomed in on a tattoo on one of his men's hands. I looked closely, my mind calculating as I realised I had seen that symbol before! I think that was when I had dealt with one of his men many times.

"They all have it, without a miss!" She said and I hummed thoughtfully, placing it securely under a file before I spoke, "I'll get a clearer picture of this made.."

We nodded in unison before she turned back to scribbling something on the papers.

The previous two days had been relentless.

We had returned from Pune the next day after meeting Amra. I explained everything to Ahmed and sent him off, hoping he'd handle everything by himself there.

And then, we didn't remember when it was morning or night if not for the calling of Azaan! We had barely talked and every time we did, it was something related to this mess.

I knew we were both busy, occupied with gathering and figuring out every hint we had managed to gather by now. But this... felt weird. It was so not us.

"Let's wrap this up! It's late already.." I said, shutting the laptop as I stood up.

"Hmm.. Go to bed, I'll be there in a while!" She mumbled back, my jaw clenching at the response.

And something told me that this fleeting span of distance wasn't just work and tiredness, but a form of defense mechanism she had practiced over years.

She was afraid of something she refused to let show.

"I'll be in the lounge, be there in five!" I said, walking behind her as I collected her hair and tied them back in a bun which had somehow loosened.

She leaned her head back, looking up at me as she smiled. I shot her a smile back, pressing a kiss to her forehead and whispered, "I'm making your favourite Chai! Be quick!"

She grinned at that, nodding her head excitedly.

And when I walked into the kitchen, I noticed raindrops hitting the windowsill, soft patter growing heavier by passing seconds. A small smile formed on my lips as I made and poured the tea into two mugs, adjusting my robe before walking out.

I stepped into the lounge, opening the double doors as the breeze brushed past me, soft and cold. I settled on the couch facing it, placing the mugs on the table in front as I waited for her.

After a few moments of stillness where I had been watching the rain drench everything under it, I heard her. The soft padding of her bare feet on the rug, the rustle of her fabric.
