A H A D

The constant buzzing of alarm pulled me out of my peaceful slumber. I turned it off, checking the time—4:30 a.m.

My eyes burned because we had slept at just 3. And since it was Eid today, there were a lot of work to be handled.

I moved, but halted when I felt the undeniable warmth of Inaya beside me. A small smile tugged at my lips as I looked down at her.

Her hair was everywhere—Across the pillow, a few scattered across my shoulder. Some of it had somehow found its way across my face.

And those tiny rebellious strands from yesterday—were currently tickling the underside of my jaw as she slept with her face tucked under my chin.

My fingers moved instinctively, brushing them away and she stirred slightly at the movement, mumbling something incoherent into my shirt.

I lowered my gaze to her face, just gazing at the way her lashes rested quietly against her cheeks, her breathing slow and even. The mehendi on her hands had darkened overnight, the patterns now a deep reddish-brown against her skin.

Leaning in, I planted a feathery kiss on her forehead. Her nose scrunched faintly in sleep and I chuckled under my breath. "Good morning to you too, sweetheart."

She shifted again, burrowing further against me like she had every intention of continuing her sleep for another three hours.

I called out, "Inaya."

No response.

I nudged her shoulder gently again, mumbling, "Inaya, wake up."

She made a quiet sound of protest and tightened her hold on my shirt. "Five minutes," she mumbled, earning a sigh from me.

"It's Eid today." That earned me a slow blink, her eyes opening and blinking out of the sleepy haze slowly. She squinted at the wall clock. "Oh."

She pushed herself upright quickly. And like it was her biggest concern, she held her hands up instantly, inspecting them with wide eyes. Her face lit up, the traces of sleep fading as she gasped, "Oh wow. Look!"

I watched her with amusement, unable to help the fascination at her cute excitement.

She shot me a wide grin before narrowing her eyes suspiciously like she noticed something. Her gaze moved slowly to my neck, then to my shoulder, and back to my face.

The grin began widening onto her lips. I frowned slightly, narrowing my eyes in question. "What?"

She immediately collapsed back onto the pillow, her laughter ringing out in the quiet, morning room.

"What?" I asked again, exasperated, to which she replied, "Ahad, you... might want to look in a mirror."

That didn't sound reassuring at all. I reached over to the bedside table and grabbed my phone, flipping the camera open to check what cartoon was born on my face at four in the morning.

And froze.

Tiny red dots were scattered across my neck. A few along my shoulder and even one near my nose.
