A week later,
Remind me if I had ever said Zara was my soul sister.
Because SHE WASN'T.
Forty minutes.
Forty freaking minutes since I was pushed down on this plush chair. And ever since, this beautician had been on my face, doing God Knows What to my hair.
She had a pair of small scissors in her hand as they moved with constant irking noise. My foot tapped against the tiled floor restlessly, the constant humming of machines and ticking of clock only intensifying my impatience.
I knew agreeing to this salon thing was a bad idea. I insisted on a simple hair-wash therapy, but Zara had this crazy idea of getting my curtain bangs done.
I gritted my teeth, shooting another death glare to this woman who was testing my patience. She smiled hesitantly, moving behind me to adjust the voluminous hair as she said, “Ma'am, it's almost done. Just the washing remains.”
“And washing will take another hour, yeah?” I said, louder than necessary so I was audible to Zara who was on the ninth cloud in the chair beside mine.
Zara chuckled with that peaceful smile on her face, casting me a side eye as she yelled back, “This is not a waste of time if you look closely. You can utilize it to think of the names for your future babies.”
She wasn't entirely wrong either.
Wait—WHAT? No. I'd decide it with Ahad.
Allah, what am I even thinking?
The ladies smiled at the exchange and I rolled my eyes, leaning back quietly again. She had booked a private session for the two of us.
I'd have loved the gesture if it didn't take this long. I hated sitting still, under someone's control and doing nothing.
Just then, my phone buzzed from the table in front. Leaning in a little, I took it and smiled as Ahad's name flashed on the screen. Zara gave me a look. “Don’t tell him where you are.”
I frowned. “Why?”
“It's a surprise, you idiot.” She snapped, gesturing with her eyes to receive the call.
Huffing under my breath, I received it, minutes of frustration evaporating as his smooth voice trailed through the device. “Assalamu'alaikum, sweetheart.”
I closed my eyes, smiling, ignoring the look the beautician gave me. “Walaikum’assalam. Where were you?”
“Had a meeting with Reyansh, will give you details later. Where are you?”
I bit my tongue, because I was badly bad at lying to Ahad. And of course, I stuttered, “I… I'm at the…” I glared at Zara, giving a look that screamed ‘HELP.’
“Inu, look at this shawl, this colour will go well with your outfit.” She yelled.
My eyes widened, understanding as I muttered to Ahad, “I'm out with Zara for shopping. She wanted something and I even had to buy it for tomorrow.”
Even though the suspicion lingered in his tone, he hummed anyhow. He then said, his tone laced with disappointment, “I came home early and you aren't here. You didn't even tell me, or I'd have joined you at the mall. Which of our malls are you at?”
