I N A Y A
The night breeze was calmer than usual as it embraced me quietly. The moon hung bright in the sky, stars twinkling like admiring it from afar.
I hugged his shirt closer, tucking a few hair strands behind my ear as I rested my arms on the railing of the deck.
Turning around, my gaze landed on a peacefully asleep Ahad. His lashes rested against his cheek, moonlight casting the perfect silvery glow over his face. His chest rose and fell with steady breaths, hand resting on the other side of the bed like he was still holding me.
A small smile played on my face, every beat of the heart feeling blissful as I turned back, admiring the swiftly waving trees in the lawn.
I couldn't sleep. Not because I couldn't, but because I couldn't stop thinking of it.
Ahad, was doing it all for me.
Everything.
Tracking the drug dealer, letting Ahmed dig out the reports, giving his best in finding out who was behind it all.
Ahad was undoubtedly targeted four years ago too, but if he wanted this for himself, he'd have done it long ago.
But he didn't. I never asked why, but maybe because he wanted to not let it affect him as he focused on becoming so good, that all the rumors were now overshadowed by his achievements.
Maybe that was what real revenge meant for him- Massive success.
But what did I want?
What do we do after we find who was behind it all these years?
Do we destroy him? Kill him? Get him arrested and imprisoned for life?
But would it ever bring back what I lost?
'But justice must be served.' Something within me spoke up.
"Who are we to serve justice?" I whispered to no one in particular, curling my fingers into a fist as I placed my chin on it.
'Victim. You're the victim and sufferer of something you never deserved, neither did mumma.'
"But maybe tha-" My eyes narrowed, gaze landing on a black stray cat, meowing as it leaped from one corner to another in our lawn.
"Meow!" I mimicked softly, a little chuckle escaping my lips as the cat turned to me. I raised my hand, calling it closer as I grabbed a bowl and water and stepped down the deck into the lawn.
It stilled for a moment, ready to leap away before I crouched down, pouring little water into the bowl. The cat meowed again, taking hesitant steps towards me. I slid the bowl towards it a little, stood up and walked in, deciding to get some milk from inside.
By the time I returned with the milk, I saw it lapping up the water quietly. And the moment it saw me, it took a step back again. I chuckled under my breath, murmuring, "Relax!" as I placed the bowl right beside it.
I walked back in, standing against the deck's railing again. I watched as the cat lapped up the milk, then water again before it looked up at me. We held each other's gaze for a moment before a little voice from Ahad distracted me.
I turned to look at him, frowning when he muttered something in his sleep. And just when I looked back once for the last time to see the cat, it was already jumping off the estate boundary.
I exhaled, bringing back in the bowls, hissing due to the cold as I closed the little deck gate. I slid the windows and drew curtains before walking back to the bed.
