Rydel's POV
Katelyn and I are having our birthday party today. It's a pool party and we are going to celebrate together since our birthdays are only a week apart. At the current moment, we are hiding from Rocky because he was teasing us so I may or may not have pushed him, and now we're going to suffer the consequence. We were in the basement hiding in the closet we were kept all our games and whatnot.
"Dude have you seen Del and Kate?" I heard Rocky ask.
"Umm...." Someone began to speak.
"That's obviously Riker. He's the worst liar in the history of liars." I whispered.
"Isn't that a good thing?" Katelyn whispered back.
"Not when our lives depend on Riker lying."
"Riker, oh my gosh." Rocky sighed with exasperation. "Just tell me where they went."
"I-umm...uh...I think they're outside." Riker stuttered.
I mentally exhaled
Just in case you think we're overreacting by hiding in a closet from my brother, we're really not. All my four brothers, Rocky is the one who picked on me the most when we were little. If he said I was gonna get payback, I would. No exception. Most likely, he would just throw us into the pool but it was still fun to be childish and play an impromptu game of hide-n-seek.
"The coast is clear." I heard Riker say faintly.
By the time I opened the door and squeezed out of the closet, Riker was gone and thankfully, there was no sign of Rocky. I opened the glass sliding door that led to the pool. Guests had arrived at our party so Katelyn and I had to play it cool and pretend we weren't just crammed in a closet for fun.
"Hey..." I tried not to sound suspicious but it didn't work.
"Oh my goodness. Girls! There you are." Mom sighed with relief. "I was looking for you and apparently Rocky is too."
Katelyn and I exchanged knowing glances before looking back at Mom.
"What are you two up to?" She squinted.
"Nothing." We both said at the same time.
"Rocky! I found the girls for you!" Mom called.Katelyn's POV
Oh great. Mama Lynch busted mine and Rydel's "cover". I used my hand to shield my eyes from the sun and looked upwards with a squint.
Rocky, who was on the deck, peered over the edge, snatched the glass of ice cold water that Riker was drinking from, and ran down the wooden stairs.
Rydel shrieked and dove into the pool but I froze in place. When my legs finally decided to cooperate, I started running away from the patio and down the grassy hill. Rocky ended up doused me with ice cold water and I shrieked as it hit me. I decided to run back over to the pool and crashed into none other than Ross. I smacked into him with such force that I knocked the wind out of myself and toppled over.
"Whoa. Are you okay?" He held his hand out to help me up.
"Mhmm." I nodded, unable to speak.
After coughing like an idiot for a good thirty seconds, I finally caught my breath.
Ross's eyes twinkled with amusement. I could tell he was really trying not to laugh at me.
"Do you need a drink?" He offered.
"Nah. I'm good." I chuckled. "Oh wait. Yes I do. Maybe. Yes. Yeah. Okay."
"So...was that a yes or a no?" A smile formed on his handsome face.
"It was a yes." I affirmed.
"Why don't you come with me?" Ross gestured for me to follow him.
"Okay." I agreed.
I followed Ross up to the deck and into the house.
"Alrighty. What'll it be?" Ross leaned on the kitchen counter. "We got rootbeer, fruit punch, orange soda, pink lemonade, water....you name it we got it...sorta."
Fidgeting with the hem of my sundress, I considered my options. "Could I have some pink lemonade please?"
"Sure thing. Lemonade's my favorite."
"Lemonade's my favorite too. What's yours?"
"Umm..." Ross let out a high-pitched giggle. "Lemonade..."
"Oh. Duh." I laughed. "Sorry. Today, I'm just not my-"
"No worries. Don't apologize. We all have days like that. You wouldn't believe how many 'blonde jokes' my siblings make and two-fourths of my siblings are blondes anyway. It's ridiculous."
"I love your family." I sighed happily.
"Me too." He winked.
Why? Why did he have to make my heart nearly explode by winking? I know he didn't mean for it to be anything but playful but still...
This is it. This is the end. This is how I'm going to die. If he winks one more time, I'll be in a coffin within two seconds.
"Hey, wanna eat something before we go swimming?" Ross asked. "I'm kinda hungry."
"Sure but remember what happened last time you swam and forgot to wait half an hour after you ate?" I chuckled.
"Ugh. Let's not relive that. That was a nightmare."
Picking up both cups full of lemonade, I began to walk to the door. "I'll go set our drinks down on one of the tables on the deck."
"Sounds good. I'll be right out."
I was so proud of myself for not spilling so far. That was my main goal right now: don't spill.
"Oh Katelyn watch the d-" Ross began to say.
It was too late. I crashed into the clear glass door because I thought it was open. My face smashed the door with such force that it send me reeling backwards and the drinks went flying.
"I got ya, Babe." Ross said, somehow catching me. "Sorry. I meant to get the door for you. Are you okay?"
"Yep. I'm good."
I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry at this point. I'm pretty sure Ross thought I was an idiot so there was no hope of me ever being with him. He would not be able to stand me.
A few minutes later, I found myself sitting on a chair in the kitchen with a bag of frozen peas held to me bruised nose. Ross had cleaned the lemonade off the floor and poured us fresh drinks.
"Wow. There's a lot people outside." I said, trying to make small talk.
"Yeah. It's kinda overwhelming." Ross nodded. "Why haven't you been hanging around by the pool, though? It's your party too and people are probably wondering where you are."
"Yeah I just haven't had the chance yet...and it's kind of overwhelming. Usually. Rydel has to be there with me every second of every minute or else I do something that I regret....like walking into a door." I scoffed at myself. "I just want Delly to have fun and not have to worry about me."
"Awww. I'm sorry you feel that way. I'll hang out with you if you want."
"Really?" My heart began to feel lighter. "You're so hot."
"What?" Ross's jaw dropped.
Oh gosh. I really hope he didn't hear that.
"I said you're so sweet." I lied.
"So are you." He patted my knee.
There was a moment of silence before either of us spoke again.
"How's your nose?" Ross asked and then erupted with laughter.
"Quit laughin' at me, Meanie." I frowned (and then winced because frowning hurt my nose for some reason).
"I'm not laughing at you. I'm laughing with you."
"Liar."
"Wait lemme see...hopefully your nose isn't broken. That wouldn't be funny."
I removed the bag of peas from my face and Ross grimaced.
"Umm. Maybe you should keep icing it...and keep the bag on your nose."
"What? Is it bad? Is my nose crooked?" I ran to the nearest mirror.
"No, no, no. It's not crooked. It's just blue and purple."
I looked at my reflection and inspected my swollen and beat-up nose. Warm tears began to roll down my cheeks.
"I look ugly." I sobbed uncontrollably.
Ross walked up to me and hugged me from behind.
"Katelyn. Listen to me." He said, looking at me through the mirror. "It's absolutely impossible for you to look ugly. So what if you've got a bit of bruising? I'm sure it hurts and I'm so sorry about that but please don't call yourself ugly. It hurts me to see you so upset. Please don't cry."
I turned around and hugged Ross properly. "Thanks, Ross. Thank you for being my friend and thank you for putting frozen veggies on my nose."
"You're welcome, Babe." He laughed. "That's what I'm here for."
"Why do you call me 'Babe'?"
"I don't know." He shrugged. "I call everybody that."
"No ya don't." I raised an eyebrow.
"Okay ya really wanna know? I call you Babe because I like you and you know it." He blurted. "Happy now?"
I was shocked, stunned, and elated. "You like me? Me?"
"Yes you. You."
"I like you too!" I practically screamed.
"Yay!" Ross mimicked my girly reaction. "Yo it feels so good to finally get that off my chest and I'm so relieved you feel the same way."
"Me too. I've been dying to tell you but I was too chicken."
Ross gasped as if he had an amazing idea. "Let's get married!"
"Okay. Whoa. Slow down, Kid." I put a hand up. "I'm still trying not to faint because you actually like me."
"Sorry. I'm just really excited about this."
"Me too. This is the best birthday ever!"
Ross hugged me so tightly that he lifted me off the ground.
"Ouch. Ouch. Watch the nose."
"Oh right." Ross quickly put me down.
Gently taking my hand, Ross looked me in the eyes. "Let's go outside and join the party. I think you'll have fun."
I smiled uncontrollably. "I totally will. Let's go...Babe."
