"(Y/N) what was that? Why has Hiccup already left?" You turned to see your mum staring at you from the doorway. You bit your lip nervously.
"Ahh... well... he was asking about an assignment-"
"It's the holidays." Your mum raised an eyebrow, "Are you sure everything's ok?"
"Perfect." You stated through gritted teeth. "Do you mind if I go out for a bit?"
Your mum didn't say anything, simply stepping aside as you passed, walking down the stairs, picking up your boots and slamming the door as you stepped into the snow. You nearly screamed in frustration but remembered your mum would hear you. Instead you felt the tears but you didn't let them fall. It was your entire fault and it wasn't your place to cry. You didn't feel you deserved it... Not after the look on both Jack and Hiccup's faces... You could see them clearly... The utter shock and betrayal as their usually bright faces failed to hide their shattered hearts.
You sighed and started walking, feet making crunching noises in the snow. Every step killed you, thoughts of Hiccup and Jack racing through your mind. You broke into a run, looking up to prevent the tears from falling. Before you knew it you were out of breath and you sunk to the ground, sobbing silently. No tears fell. No emotion showed. But all you felt inside was pain.
"Are you ok?" You heard a voice. You looked up, spying an elderly man looking at you curiously as he sat on a small bench. His furrow was creased, curiosity and worry knitted in his eyebrows. He clutched a walking stick weakly as he stood up and tried to move towards you.
"I'm ok." You said hurriedly, jumping to your feet and moving to make sure the old man didn't fall over. Surprise quickly took over you as you realised where you were. You looked at the bench and a pang went through you. This was where Hiccup had taken you on your date. You smiled at the curious old man, hiding your true feelings as you helped him back to the bench. You sat beside him.
"Why did you look so sad?" He asked. You looked out over the park, spying a small bird hopping around. You watched it as you spoke. "I recently lost a friend." You cast your gaze on your hands.
"I'm so sorry." The man whispered, his croaky voice filled with pain and sorrow.
"You have no idea how I feel." You whispered harshly, the tears falling now. You looked up at the man. His eyes were filled with pain and regret.
He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small locket. He opened it and you saw a small picture of an old lady. She was smiling. Your heart felt warm.
"I recently lost my wife." The man whispered, a single tears sliding down his cheek. Guilt flooded through you. "I'm so sorry." You whispered, taking his hand and lightly squeezing it.
"Don't be." The man smiled at you, "Life is unfair. There's always going to be good and bad things that happen... This is just one of those bad things that you have to get through."
You smiled at him. He smiled back, eyes shining. "My wife was the most precious and special person... She was the bravest and sweetest girl I could ever have asked for. It hurts know.... losing her I mean... But you know what?" He smiled at you kindly, "That's how I know every second I spent with her was worth it."
He squeezed your hand gently. You gently shut the locket and handed it back to him. He took it gratefully, putting it carefully in his pocket and he stood up and hobbled away without another word.
You bowed your head. Life is unfair. But you had made it unfair. You had caused all this pain and suffering and now you were paying the price. Your eyes flicked back to the bird, still pecking at the ground for food. It chirped, looking up at you. You held out your hand and it moved towards you slowly, curiously but with caution. You crouched on your knees and stayed still, waiting, as it got closer.
"It's ok." You whispered. It chirped happily, increasing its pace. The bird was an arm's reach away from you. Without warning, it chirped loudly, eyes widening and took off, flying away.
"What-" You felt a pain rip through your skull as something hard hit it. The last thing you saw was that ground rushing towards you and a deep voice laughing.
