Imagine. Darren and you were in the kitchen talking about your respective days as usual when your daughter interrupted you. She was all dressed up for the party she was supposed to attend that night. She looked fantastic. "Mom! Dad! I'm going!" the 17 year old teen quickly said before hurrying to kiss your cheek and her father's. "Have fun!" Darren greeted with a smile. She smiled back and ran to the door again, probably late. You were about to continue the conversation where it had been stopeed, but once again, your daughter's face appeared in the crook of the door. "Oops, I forgot! Can I have a condom?" Sami asked, naturally. "What?!" Darren almost shouted in shock. "First drawer in our bathroom" you answer. Darren turned to you with wide eyes. His look reflected horror and maybe a kind of disappointment. "Thanks!" Sami shouted and left to go find what she was looking for. "Wait a second young lady!" Darren stopped her before she could. You rolled your eyes. The young lady thing was not a good sign, ever. "Who is goung to be at this party?" Darren asked. "Dad, I'm late" Sami reminded her father. "Who?" he asked again louder. "Friends, people I don't know and my boyfriend. Can I go now?" asked the annoyed teenager. Darren was about to say something, surely to make her stay, but you beat him into it. "Yes you can. Go before you miss the party" you smile. Sami flashed you a thankful smile before going out the door and running to her car. You closed the door behind her and looked at Darren angrily. The whole father thing he was doing right now was almost a caricature. Your husband looked at you in shock and opened his arms wide in protest. "You seriously just let her go like that?" Darren said a little too loud for you. "Let's go back in the kitchen, shall we? Kyle doesn't need to hear what you and I have to say to each other, and trust me, I have a lot" you admit.
Darren shook his head and followed you in the kitchen, closing the door behind him. "You let her go away to a party with a fucking condom? Are you serious right now?" he whimpered. "What did you want me to do? Say 'No, do without'?" you protested. "She's going to attend a party where her boyfriend is with a condom, do you know what this means?" Darren explained and put his hands to his temples. "Of course I know! Darren it's not like we never discussed it! We talked to her. She knows everything she has to know and I consider myself pretty proud of the fact she openly talk about that with us, without being ashamed" you replied. "How could do you do that? She's a baby!" he stated. "She's not! She's 17! She's a young woman, let her be one for god sake" you shouted. Darren looked away and seemed to think for a second. "I'm gotta go take her, this is not happening" he finally said before heading to the door. "Darren Everett Criss don't you dare! You're gonna stay here, sit and listen to every fucking word I have to say about this because clearly we have a problem here" you said firmly. Darren sighed at the door and turned to you, the same expression on his face. After a few seconds of fighting each other's glances, he finally took a sit around the counter. "I'm gonna tell what would happen if I didn't give she the condom, or worst, if you didn't let her go. She would have been angry at us and she would have the right to, because we always said we would be there if she needs us, for anything. And another night, she would lie to us and go to a party, or her boyfriend's, and she would buy her own condoms with her own money, or even worst, she would have gone without one. Without any protection. Do you want our daughter to get sick or pregnant just because you can't take the fact that she might have sex with Jeff?" you asked him. "I don't like that guy" Darren said to his hands. "We don't ask you to. Sami does, and if you like him or not, they are happy and they love each other" you explained. Darren looked away. He knew you were right. Jeff has come multiple times to your home and he was always nice and polite.
The only reason why Darren didn't like him is because he was his daughter's boyfriend. "If you keep reacting like you did, she's not gonna trust you anymore. She's not gonna talk to you about some stuff anymore. Is that what you want?" you demanded him. You stood on the opposite side of the counter and lean on it to look at him in the eyes. "Of course not" Darren breathed out. "So you should stop. We always said we wanted the kids to tell us everything, and I think we managed to make them trust us no matter the subject, and I don't want that to change" you explained more calmly. "Me neither. I'm sorry. I'm an idiot" Darren sighed and took your hands in his. "Thanks but, you shouldn't apologize to me" you mentioned. "I know, I will talk to her" Darren nodded. You leaned on the counter further to place a kiss on his soft lips before moving on to the end of the evening.
When you woke up the next day, you headed to the kitchen to have some breakfast. When you found out that Sami and Darren were talking on the couch of the living room, their back turned to you, you stepped back not to interrupt. "Listen, I'm sorry for yesterday. You did the right thing. It's just that..." he sighed. "For me, you're still that little girl who was running all over the house with your cute little face and your little curls to come greet me when I got back from work. And you will always be that for me, but I have to accept that you've grown too. And I'm really proud of you Sam, I really am. The fact that I can't accept that you're a real woman now and that you start to really live is on me, not on you. I don't want you to think that I'm not okay with that, or disappointed, because I'm not. Okay?" Darren explained to his daughter. Sami nodded and hugged him. "Okay. Thank you Dad" she answered in his shoulder. They pulled back and she breaths out, probably from relief. "And uhm... We didn't do it yesterday. It was just... in case" Sami precised. Darren worked hard not to show off the smile he was urging to put on his face and nodded. You decided to walk up to them, greeted both of them before going into the kitchen. Darren entered a few seconds after. "Did you hear that?" he said with a satisfied smile on his face. "I did. Don't get too excited, you know it's gonna happen" you explain when he took you close to him, his arms surrounding your waist. "I know" Darren said before pecking your lips. "Breakfast?" he asked. "Breakfast" you smiled.
