Imagine. Today was Sami's first day of kindergarten. You couldn't believe your little girl was already 5 years old. Darren and you both took the day off to be there on that special day. "Here, put this on your back" you said to your daughter in the parking lot. You put her backpack to her level and she slowly put it on. It was a Disney one, of course. Darren and you wouldn't even accept that one of your kids wouldn't got a Disney backpack for kindergarten. "Come on, let's go" you smiled. Sami looked up at you and smiled back. Her two little pigtails showed off her cute black curls and her eyes were twinkling. She took one of your hand and one of Darren's and you three walked to the entry, making Sami giggle by swinging her between you two.
You were introduced to the teacher, put her stuff away, and everyone was quickly encouraged to show the kids how fun kindergarten is. Sami dragged you both to a spot where a big basket full of toys were. "Sit, Mommy. You too Daddy" she smiled up at you. You both sat and looked at her play, eventually sharing a few awes on the way. "Vroom vroom" the little girl said as she made her trunk go closer to Darren's. "Aah! Be careful. We're gonna have an accident" her father said jokingly. Sam giggled and dramatically put her trunk into her father's. "Boom!" she exclaimed. "Oh no!" Darren fake pouted. "It's okay, Daddy. I can give you a hug" she exclaimed and ran into her father's arms. Darren giggled and hugged back this little piece of you and him.
You looked around you and noticed that a lot of the parents had already left. While Sami was searching for a new toy to play with, you and your husband stood up. You looked at him and sighed. It was so weird to leave her like this. You tried to sound joyful and like the whole story was not a big deal when you announce "Baby, Daddy and I are gonna go". "No!" Sami almost screamed. She ran to you and hung on to your leg before starting to sob.
"Why do you have to go? Stay with me, please. I don't want to be alone" she begged into your legs. Her sobs turned quickly into full cries. You pat her hair and turned your head to Darren, on the verge of tears yourself. You didn't want to leave her. She was your baby. Darren tilted his head and bent down next to you. "Sam, look at me" he said sweetly. Her cries calmed down and she slowly took out her head from your legs. He looked around and grabbed the first pen he saw. "See that clock over there?" he pointed. The toddler nodded. "When the clock marks that number" he gently tapped her hand where he was writing the number 3 "I will come pick you up, ok?". Sami examined her hand and nodded again. "But until then, you're gonna stay here and play and have fun. And maybe if you're good, we can go eat ice cream after" he whispered to her like a secret. Sami looked up at her father and asked with a teary voice "With sparkles on it?". Darren chuckled. "Yeah, with as such sparkles as you want. Just don't tell Mommy" he winked. You did your best not to giggle. "But for that, you have to stop crying, ok?" he brushed the tears from his daughter's face. The young lady seemed to be happier after a few seconds. "Come on, give Mommy and I a hug before we go" he opened his arms and you kneel down too. Sami put her arms around both of your necks and hugged tight. "Love you" she said. "We love you too sweetie" you kissed her head. You quickly said goodbye and she went back to the toys.
You stood up and Darren took your hand. As you two walked away from the class, you felt him squeezing your hand. He leaned on you and said almost in a whisper "For our dignity, let's hold back the tears until we're in the car".
