Imagine. You were sleeping peacefully with your husband when you heard your son, Kyle, calling him. "Daddy" you heard from his room. Darren turned to you, and with his eyes still shut, cuddles you closer. "Daddy" you heard Kyle screaming a little louder. "Darren" you mumble sleepily. Your husband groaned. "You heard him, go check on him" you say with the same tone. "He's gonna fall asleep again" Darren whispered, before he put his head in the crook of your neck. A few breaths later, the usual scream turned into a more scared one. Kyle was definitely on the edge of crying, if he wasn't already. "Ok I go" Darren quickly said to you before throwing the sheets away and headed to his son's room. He rubbed his eyes and tried to make himself as awake as he could when he entered Kyle's room.
"What's going on, buddy?" Darren asks the 4 year old boy, who was currently holding his blanket up to his neck. "There is a monster" Kyle explained with a little voice. He definitely sounded scared. "We slayed all the monsters before you went to bed baby. There is no monsters anymore" Darren explained calmly. He closed the door not to wake you or your daughter. "But, Daddy, there is one in the closet" Kyle pouted at his father. Darren turned on the nighstand light and looked around the room. "Can I take that?" He asks as he points to a toy sword his son got for his birthday. Kyle nodded vigorously. Darren took the sword and slowly walked to the closet. "Go get him Dad!" the little boy encouraged his father. Darren had to bite his lip to push away the giggle he was trying to hold back. He counts down from three and opened the closet. He rushed into it and swung his arm to fight the imaginary closet monster. He closed the closet behind it and pretended to fight, eventually making some ninja sounds on the way. After a few seconds, Darren went out and sighed, rubbing a hand against his forehead. He found his son standing on his bed.
"Did you got him?" Kyle asked with wide eyes. Darren pinched his lips and nodded, the sword resting on his shoulder. "Yeah I did" he said proudly. "Yeeeah!!" the toddler screamed and jumped on the bed. "Shhh" Darren giggles, a finger to his lips. "You're gonna wake up Sami or Mommy". "Sorry" the boy apologizes as he sat back on his bed. "Ok it's night-night time now buddy. You have to sleep. It's super late" Darren explained. Kyle layed back down and his dad put his blanket on him again. He placed a kiss on top of his son's head and headed to the corridor. "Daddy?" Darren heard before he went. "What?" he turned to the bed again. "I think Ted is scared that monsters could come back" Kyle explained as he holds his stuffed dragon for his dad to see. Darren tilted his head and sighed. He knew who was really scared, and it was certainly not a stuffed animal.
"Do you want to sleep with Mommy and Daddy tonight? We would make sure no monsters will ever come back in our home tomorrow, okay?" Darren proposed. Kyle agreed and went out of bed to catch the hand Darren was holding out for him. He brought the boy to your room and put him on the bed to settle him between you and himself. Your son cuddled against you, which made you open your eyes and smile. "Are you better sweetie?" you ask him. "Yeah! Daddy pushed away all the monsters!" he explained excitedly. "Daddy is good at protecting us, don't you think?" you ask and glance at your husband, who put his head back on the pillow. He smiled at you. Kyle nodded. "Daddy is my hero" the little boy affirmed before he closes his eyes. Darren chuckled and grinned fondly, his lips mouthing a big "Aw". You kiss your son's forehead and look at Darren. "He's mine too, baby" you admit. "He's mine too" you grin.
