~Demi’s POV~
After working non-stop for the whole day, I was finally able to go home. My manager and I agreed to do a tour across the United States and into Canada to promote my new single. I hoped that Karoline would be happy about the news, but we weren’t exactly on good terms, so it could have gone either way. I parked my car in the driveway and locked the doors behind me. Upon entering the house, I could hear faint humming and the television set on low volume. I entered the living room to find Marissa sitting on the couch with a sleeping Sky in her arms.
“Hey, Demi,” She chirps.
“What are you doing here?” I wondered.
She set Sky in her folding bassinet.
“Well, I picked Sky up and came back here. Karoline was asleep and I didn’t have the heart to wake her, so I’ve just been waiting for you to get here,” She informed me with a shrug.
“You didn’t have to do that, Mar,” I groaned, feeling guilty.
“Hey, what are friends for? Plus, it’s not like Sky’s a handful or anything,” She trieed to reassure me.
“Okay,” I mumbled, still feeling guilty. “Is Karoline still asleep?”
“I think so. She never came down here, but that might not mean anything.”
“I’m going to go check on her,” I say. “Thanks again, Mar,” I murmured, engulfing my friend in a hug.
“You’re welcome, Dems.”
She released me and grabed her purse. While she was walking to my front door, she turned around.
“Do not be a stranger,” She adds with a wink, causing me to chuckle.
After moving Sky to her crib, I ascended the stairs to Karoline’s room. I knocked softly on the slightly ajar door. I pushed the door open further to reveal Karoline outstretched on her bed with her ear buds stuffed into her ears. I sat on the edge of her bed and she jumped slightly. I giggled as she removed her ear buds.
“You scared me.”
“Sorry,” I apologized, trying to muster a sincere look.
“No you’re not,” She giggleed, tossing a throw pillow at me.
I cought it easily and satt it beside me.
“Okay, so, maybe I’m not sorry. You’re reaction was pretty funny.”
She playfully glared at me, and I returned the expression. She threw her head back and laughed. A grin formed on my lips as I realized that I missed her laugh. We hadn’t been as close lately and it was killing me. It broke my heart when she told me that I was not giving her enough attention. If I could only have given her all of my attention, I would have in a heartbeat, but unfortunately that was not the case. My grin sliped from my lips as I remembered my tour.
“I have to tell you something, baby-girl,” I whispered, my tone unmistakably solemn.
Her laughter abruptly died, causing a stabbing pain to seize my heart. I’d do anything to hear her laughter every second of every day.
“What?” She wondered.
I nervously swallowed.
“I-I don’t know how to tell you this-“
“Just tell me the truth, Demi,” She demanded.
I tightly shut my eyes, trying to both regain my composure and reign in my tears. Her calling me Demi was like a slap in the face. I let a sigh escape my lips.
