"Elena?"
Staring out the window, I watch as people from the small town below us walked around the streets and into the stores. They stopped in front of windows and pointed at the newest clothes for the week, while others ran into their friends or family.
"Elena..." Feeling Burke placing his hand on my shoulder, I look over.
"What?"
"You didn't answer me? Do you want the job?" He asked again.
Staring into his big brown eyes, a rush of memories came back.
The first day I met him was during my first solo surgery as an intern, he was the Cardio Surgeon on call that night, while I was performing General on the patient below me. And then my memories jumped forward to the night were he quit his position at the Hospital, leaving me along to defend for myself.
"...If I take it. How long is the contract?"
"A year...after that you can decide if you want to stay or not."
With my back towards the window, I glanced over at the picture of his family. His wife sitting beside him with both of his daughters in between them.
I reminisced about the time Theo and I were just the two of us, without Derek, Callie, or Owen. We were happy, I was happy.
"Okay, I'll take the job."
"Great just let me get the-"
"Don't think that I'm taking this job because you're desperate to leave. I'm doing this for the intern or resident that has been working with you for years...the one that you're going to be leaving behind. I'm doing this for them." I said sternly as his eyes were empty with emotion.
"..Alright."
Opening and closing the door behind him, I stood behind his desk.
Crossing my arms from the chilling air blowing on me, I glance around the room taking in every detail. The plants in the corner, a single lamp sitting on an end table beside the window.
"I'm not in Kansas anymore..." I whispered to myself.
Jackson's POV
Opening the door to my apartment the T.V in my living room was on as April was sitting on the couch eating leftovers.
"Hey, how was work?" She asked.
Setting aside my bag on the table I throw my keys in the bowl next to it.
"Fine, it was a normal day." I whispered as I sat next to her.
"Have you called Elena?" She asked flipping the channel.
"No, we're on different time zones...so calling her won't change anything."
"You should at least try? She's your friend...probably needing some advice right now."
Grabbing my arm she puts it around her shoulders as she lays her head on my chest.
"She's brave...taking Theo with her to a country she's never been. I wouldn't be able to do that with our kids.."
Glancing at the T.V and then at April, I take a deep breath before watching the game.
"I wanted to ask you something?" She whispered.
Coming back from the kitchen during Half-time, I set the popcorn between the both of us.
"What is it?"
"It's about kids...how are we going to raise them? How do you want to raise?" She asks.
"I have no idea? Why?"
